Don’t Worry, Philadelphia. Chip Kelly Is Here to Stay (Maybe)

There’s always rumors surrounding guys coming up to the NFL from college to coach, especially when they’re failing at the NFL level. Last year especially, there was ongoing stories about how Chip Kelly was going to return to college football unless the Eagles gave him total control – which is exactly what happened during the offseason. Whether those stories had merit is a different issue.

According to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman, we don’t have to worry about Chip going anywhere, for better or worse. Even though there hasn’t been a plethora of stories surrounding this issue this season, Freeman notes that Chip has told the Eagles he won’t be going back to college any time soon.

I’ve been hard on Chip Kelly, and he deserves much of the blame for the Eagles’ slow start. Actually, all of it. But let’s be clear. Kelly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The reason is simple: He has total control. A coach with the control Kelly possesses is extremely rare in the NFL. He has the keys to the car, and he won’t give up those keys easily.

According to a team source, Kelly has told people in the Eagles organization that he isn’t moving back to college, and the idea that he would now is ridiculous. So, for the moment at least, that settles that.

That settles that. Whatever that means. Sure, the Eagles’ slow start is less than ideal, and I’m off Chip’s bandwagon for the time being because his gameplans have been terrible through the first four weeks – yes, even in the Jets game – but I’m not so sure I hear a lot of talk about him leaving for college. But, at least there’s that.
