The Fix for the Eagles Offense?

So as we head into the bye week, we could continue to discuss the same boring stories every sports site talks about. But, not me. I want to talk about the future, places to find fixes, and find reasons to excite us rather than throw gasoline on a blazing fire that is our city’s football team.

I am a huge draft guy and keep in regular contact with scouts employed by NFL teams, and do research whenever and wherever I can. It’s a passion of mine, so I want to share some of that with you all.

I am not a Bradford apologist at all, and am not nearly as forgiving as most (see my Tweet just this morning), but I will talk about potential replacements and fixes at the QB spot later this week.

Let’s get to it. What is the fix to the Eagles offense? While, yes, obviously the offensive line and quarterback position need to be addressed, that’s not where I’m going to go on this one. Josh Huff was supposed to be a multi-threat weapon that could flourish in Chip’s system. The problem? Huff has yet to really become that weapon. He’s shown flashes, but wends consistency. We need a Percy Harvin-type talent with DeSean Jackson-type explosiveness that can show up week in and week out.

So who is this that I’m talking about that the Eagles could get and would fix the offense? Boom.

Corey Coleman. Baylor. Wide receiver. 5’11”. 190 lbs.

Coleman is arguably the best receiver in the nation playing in the Baylor high octane offense. He’s scoring TD’s at a video game type rate. He currently has 16 TD’s through only 7 games. Coleman is converting 39% of his receptions into touchdowns as Baylor steamrolls through opponents averaging nearly 64 points per game.

Coleman may not have Megatron type size, but his athletic ability and aggressive style of play seamlessly fit into Chip’s offense that needs more playmakers. Also, he could step in almost immediately considering he already plays in this type of offense.

One of the things the Eagles receivers have lacked this season is the ability to get separation, and then make plays when the ball is delivered to them. Coleman has great abilities that help him get separation, and making plays is second nature to him.

Coleman also brings something that the Eagles could use… Outside talent. Coleman lines up on the left side of the field almost exclusively. He isn’t just a slot weapon, which we have enough of.

His ability may be bigger than his stature, but his big game potential will serve tremendously in his journey to the NFL. His athleticism allows him to matchup with any cornerback in the country on 50/50 balls and goal line fades. The following pass was incomplete, but it displays Coleman’s explosion and potential to bring down tough catches.

Also, he has return ability. While we can say others on our team do that, you can never have too many, and we need to lessen the load on Sproles as we move on as he’s an older, smaller guy, that eventually one day will slow down.

Knocks on Corey Coleman are his tendency to body catch and his inconsistent effort with blocking. The blocking aspect does have some background behind it. Baylor HC Art Briles has stated that he wants his offense to go up tempo, high speed all the time. If the ball isn’t coming in a receiver’s direction Briles’ philsophy is to save energy and be ready to go full throttle for the next snap. The body catching tendency can be concerning, especially with the recent struggle with drops by the Eagles receivers. This is a habit that would need to be resolved, but with all of the other massive positives, this can be forgiven if he committed to bettering his habits and hands.

Coleman is an explosive talent that even in a league of athletes is rare, and has not been seen here since we let DeSean go (has run a 4.32 40 yd dash). He’s just as good a prospect as any in this upcoming draft. He could sneak into the 1st round, but it is most likely he’d be a 2nd to 3rd round pick.

So, while we have a bunch of aspects to work out on the offensive side of the ball, Coleman is the type of talent you don’t always have a chance to get on your squad. I think the Eagles should make sure they try as hard as possible to snag Coleman in the right spot this upcoming draft.

Here is one more insane highlight to showcase what Coleman would bring to the Eagles.
