Going Goffing? Our 2016 NFL Mock Draft

What if the Los Angeles Rams take Carson Wentz?

It’s been an anxious-filled eight days, you can’t help but think about it. The reports say the Rams are taking Jared Goff, I’d say it’s 90-95 percent chance of happening.

But …

What if the Los Angeles Rams took Carson Wentz?

Then what? It is Philadelphia after all, we’re used to these sort of shenanigans. Obviously, the Eagles would select Goff with the No. 2 selection, but deep down it wouldn’t be the potential franchise quarterback that head coach Doug Pederson wanted. Pederson said last month that he “loves” Wentz and wanted the Eagles to do anything to get him.

Goff isn’t the coveted jewel.

Personally, I think the Rams take Goff because head coach Jeff Fisher is a ticking timebomb. He’s firmly on the hot seat and isn’t ready to wait until Wentz is ready. Los Angeles has a stellar front seven featuring Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn to go with the emerging Todd Gurley on offense. They also just moved to Los Angeles from St. Louis. They need to win now!

Why would Wentz makes sense, though?

In 1995, the Tennessee Titans took an FCS quarterback by the name of Steve McNair, who wound up being Fisher’s coveted jewel by 1999 when he led the franchise a yard short of a potential Super Bowl. Tennessee, however, went 32-38 over his first five years after being promoted to head coach as a 36-year-old with six games left in the 1994 season. He was young, he was ready to wait on McNair, who is the same type of 230-pound burly runner and pass thrower that Wentz is.

That’s why I give the Rams a 10 percent chance of taking Wentz.

And if the Eagles got Goff I don’t know how I’d react, but some think he’s better than Wentz and would be a better option. The Rams and Browns both reportedly prefer Goff. That means respected quarterback guru and new Cleveland Browns head coach didn’t see enough in Carson Went to stay in the No. 2 spot. The people who aren’t Goff fans might prefer Ezekiel Elliott, who garnered a lot of buzz during the lead-up to Thursday night’s draft prior to the trade up to No. 2.

I never thought there’d be another lead-up to a draft quite the one we had last year with the Marcus Mariota speculation, but here we are just one year later.
