What I look for in a guard:
Strength- Pushing your defender off the ball in the running game and absorbing contact and holding ground in pass protection.
Quickness- Having the agility and fluidity to get through the hole, change direction and angle block. It’s also important to be quick when pulling, trapping and getting to the second level to take on linebackers.
Toughness- Playing with a mean streak and physicality. Sticking up for your quarterback when a defender takes a cheap shot.
Hands- Hand use is vital in the trenches, trying to escape those enormous defensive tackles and prevent them from freeing up linebackers. Punching, recoiling and shocking defenders.
