How Does Carson Wentz’s Debut Stack Up Against Other Notable Quarterback Debuts?

Week 1 in the NFL is now in the books and the Wentz Wagon is in full speed ahead after an outstanding debut on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Many have cautioned fans to take Wentz’s 22 for 37, 278 passing yard, two touchdown performance with a grain of salt as it was against the Browns, however, the question is, how good was Wentz’s inaugural NFL regular season stat line compare to other notable rookie QBs?

Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles

McNabb made his first NFL start on November 14, 1999, his rookie season. The former two-sport athlete at Syracuse led the birds to a 35-28 victory where he was 8-21, for 60 yards. McNabb failed to contribute to a touchdown in the victory, but he did throw for one two-point conversion and run for another.

Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts

The elder Manning brother started week one of his first NFL season, just like Wentz. However, Manning didn’t enjoy the same success as the newly minted Eagle. The former Tennessee Volunteer went 21-37 for 302 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in a 24-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

Matthew Stafford also suffered a loss in his first NFL start, which also was in the first game of the season. Stafford had a rougher go of it than most. Former Georgia gunslinger was 16-37 for 205 yards and three interceptions in a 45-27 loss at the hands of the New Orleans Saints.

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

Big Ben did not start Week 1 of his rookie campaign, but he got the start in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers lost 30-13 as Roethlisberger wen 12-20 with 176 passing, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. However, he went on to have the second best career of the quarterbacks listed here, behind Peyton Manning.

Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams

The man that allowed the Wentz Era to begin sooner than expected had a poor NFL debut, as you would have expected. Sammy Sleeves went 32-55 for 253 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions, in a 17-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. But Bradford also lost his second career game, a 16-14, loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Win, lose, or tie, you can be rest assured that Wentz is better than one other quarterback from this year’s draft class…
