Joel Embiid Shines against the NBA Champions

Put him in the 3-point contest!

Joel Embiid knocked down all four of his attempts from beyond the arc and finished with a career-high 22 points, but the Philadelphia 76ers suffered another heartbreaking loss in the final seconds, falling to the defending-champion Cleveland Cavaliers 102-101 at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.

Embiid also pulled a LeBron on LeBron.

Shhhh, we don’t have to tell anybody it was a goaltend. The Cameroonian also added six rebounds and four blocks, finishing 7-of-13 from the floor for the Sixers.

Channing Frye hit a go-ahead triple with 1:05 left and Gerald Henderson turned the ball over on the Sixers’ final offensive touch to seal the outcome. Philly gave the ball away on each of its final five possessions.

Sergio Rodgriguez showcased more stellar point guard play. The Spaniard dished out 11 assists to go along with seven points and six boards.

The recently-acquired Ersan Ilyasova netted 21 points, including a triple to give the Sixers their last lead, 101-99, with 2:36 left. Jahlil Okafor added 14 points and five boards in defeat.

LeBron James led all scorers with 25 points to go with 14 helpers and seven rebounds and surpassed Hakeem Olajuwon (26,946) for 10th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 26,970. Love poured in 20 points and snatched 11 rebounds for Cleveland, which moved to 6-0 on the season and are the NBA’s lone unbeaten team.

It looked early on like it’d be a rout when the Cavaliers closed the opening quarter on a 20-2 run and take a 34-19 advantage into the second. Undeterred, the young Sixers fought back in the second with a 21-6 spurt as a Rodriguez trey trimmed a once 18-point hole to 47-44 late in the frame. Cleveland, however, was able to stretch the margin back to 57-46 heading into the break.

The Cavs were up 70-58 just prior to the midway point of the third before Philadelphia clawed back in it once more. Embiid sunk a pair of free throws to cap a 14-4 Sixers swing to cut the lead to 74-72. Embiid banked in his fourth triple in the waning seconds of the period and the Sixers trailed 82-80 going into the final quarter.

An Okafor drive, spin and layup from the right elbow at the 8:32 mark gave the Sixers their first lead since the first quarter and that advantage reached 96-91 following a Henderson jumper midway through the fourth.
