Matt Rhule Reportedly Turned Down Oregon

Baylor apparently wasn’t the first or last school to go after Temple football’s former head coach, Matt Rhule. According to this tweet from CSN Philly’s John Clark, Rhule reportedly turned down Oregon.

Clark’s tweet credits CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd with the report.

New Baylor coach Matt Rhule turned down an offer from Oregon to go to Baylor, a highly-placed source told CBS Sports … Before taking the Baylor job, Rhule had met personally with Nike CEO Phil Knight, the source said. Oregon reportedly interviewed Taggart and Boise State’s Bryan Harsin over the weekend.

Maybe it’s just an elaborate smokescreen for Chip Kelly’s triumphant return to Eugene.

I am disappointed in Coach Rhule. A little more than a year ago I was at a small dinner party with Coach Rhule. He and I talked about the coaching history in TU basketball and he said that he would like to develop the same in TU football. I don’t fault him for what he has done only for how it contradicts what he so fervently stressed to me. I am feeling as if TU is destined to be a doormat on the way up for coaches and not a landing spot for quality.
