2017 NFL Draft Preview: Our Top 5 Running Backs

There’s no doubt that the Philadelphia Eagles could use a running back, but how will they approach it?

Will they select one in the first round and go with either Christian McCaffrey or Dalvin Cook, wait until the second round and pick the controversial Joe Mixon or wait until the middle rounds to take one.

Each of the three listed above would fit what head coach Doug Pederson likes to do on offense because of their ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. McCaffrey is the best receiver out of the bunch, his route running skills are just about as good as the top wide receivers in this draft. Mixon is the best between the tackles and is a perfect fit if Pederson would like to get back to playing power football and I believe Cook is the best one of the three.

As for Mixon, Eagles vice president of football operations Howie Roseman dodged the initial question of whether he is on the Eagles’ draft board during he and Joe Douglas’ final press conference before the NFL Draft last week, but did discuss that each player with a character concern is judged on an individual basis.

Each case you have to judge individually, you got to do your research, you got to go through the whole process … So we get all of the information and we make a decision like anything else.

As for the middle rounds, the back I have my eye on is Toledo’s Kareem Hunt, who is a three-down back that possess great hands and runs with balance after contact. He’s a boring runner, he’s not going to make people miss, but has solid vision and maximizes yardage with his balance and forward lean. Texas’ D’Onta Foreman could be another option. He’s a power back a la LeGarrette Blount that showcases impressive athleticism and quick feet for a 6’0 233-pounder.

Douglas believes this draft is very deep at cornerback and running back, which are two positions of great need for the Birds.

I really feel like running back is a deep draft, corner, tight end. I think even through the process, offensive line, there’s some good players across the board.

I agree.
