Live Reaction and Thoughts on the Eagles Taking Derek Barnett

I thought it was going to be Reuben Foster, the plethora of fans around me thought it was going to be Foster too, but then Roger Goodel announced Derek Barnett’s name.

Barnett wasn’t booed, it just wasn’t the player a lot of people around us wanted, including myself.

Take a listen.

The Philadelphia Eagles made the “safe” pick, taking a defensive end that is going to get after the quarterback from a Wide 9 alignment using his quick first step and ability to bend the edge. His run defense is going to need some work, but I’ll get into all of that in a film study I’ll be putting together for the morning.

Foster wound up going 31st to the San Francisco 49ers, so clearly teams were worried about his character and shoulder. Earlier in the week I discussed the Eagles possibly trading back into the 20’s, grabbing one of your cornerbacks and obtaining an extra third-round pick if the offensive weapons weren’t there at 14. I would’ve rather done that than pick Barnett, who wasn’t a terrible choice.

It was just the safest one.
