The Eagles Have Officially Released Ryan Mathews

Ryan Mathews was back in Philadelphia today to get looked at by Eagles doctors. He was given a clean bill of health.

And now he’s been released.

Everyone knew this was coming, as it’s a mere formality. Mathews will likely be signed by another team soon. I thought he did well in the running game last season notwithstanding his fumbles and injury history.

The Eagles released a statement on Mathews:

“We want to thank Ryan for his contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons. We spoke today and had a productive conversation about his future and the direction of our team going forward. First and foremost, we are glad that Ryan is healthy and has been cleared to return to football activities, but given the current state of our running back position, we feel like it is best for both sides to go in a different direction. We wish him all the best as he continues his career.”

Mathews injured his neck against the New York Giants last December, suffering a herniated disk. Here’s the play in which he got injured:
