What’s Happening in Philly This Weekend: Feb. 16-18

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. President’s Day Weekend

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, February 16th-Monday, February 19th

This coming Monday is President’s Day. The American holiday will be celebrated all over the city at several venues and institutions. The Museum of the American Revolution will be offering free admission all weekend. At the National Liberty Museum you’ll be able to create your own White House china at crafts stations. There will also be trivia, games, and other prizes.

2. Marvel Universe Live!

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, February 16th-Monday, February 19th

The Wells Fargo Center is usually known for the weekly sporting events that take place at the massive venue. Over the next few days, a new kind of matchup will take center stage. Marvel Universe Live! will showcase cutting-edge special effects, great performers, in-your-face action, and storytelling. Bring the entire family out for this amazing adventure.

3. Art After 5

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, February 16th, 5PM-8:45PM

The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds a special happy hour series each Friday. The gathering uniquely blends arts and music in this special clash of culture. Each week there’s small bites, beverages, cocktails, special gallery access, and live music. This week Red40 will be performing classic jazz standards and originals.

4. Gobsmacked! The Amazing A Cappella and Beatboxing Show

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, February 16th, 8PM

Years ago Glee was a hit series on FOX. Today, we’re knee-deep in Pitch Perfect sequels and it seems that this brand of entertainment is here to stay. GOBSMACKED! is a successful world-wide tour that highlights the prowess of great vocals, tremendous harmonies, and beatboxing rhythms.

5. A Play, A Pie, and A Pint

Where: Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Historic Taproom, 2440 Frankford Ave.
When: Friday, February 16th, 6:30PM

ONE-NIGHT STANDS: Three Comedies about Love & Relationships is a tremendous showcase that’s taken over the Philadelphia Brewing Company over the last few days.  For just $15 guests can see a great theatrical show, get a slice of pizza, and a pint of beer or soft drink. Come see these creative romantic comedies inside this special setting.

6. Really

Where: Theatre Exile, 531 N. 7th St.
When: Runs through Sunday, February 18th

Theatre Exile’s closing weekend of Really is here. The play depicts the connection between a grieving girlfriend and her deceased boyfriend’s mother. In the studio which she once shared with her lost love Calvin, his mother and she attempt to do a portrait session. This poignant drama captures the sentiment of loss and is carried by great performers.

7. Waitress

Where: Forrest Theatre, 1114 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Sunday, February 18th

Speaking of great performances, the musical that has swept the nation over the last few years is back in Philadelphia. Waitress is an award-winning and Tony nominated sensation. The musical lyrics of singer-songwriter of Sara Bareilles beautifully scores this tale of love and a woman finally trusting in her talents.

8. Roy Wood Jr.

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Friday, February 16th-Sunday, February 18th

Each week Punch Line Philly delivers  great stand up shows and crowd pleasing events. This weekend The Daily Show with Trevor Noah correspondent Roy Wood Jr. will be doing at three-night residency at the comedy house. This seasoned talent in comedy will have you laughing all night.

9. Justin Willman

Where: Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Sansom St.
When: Friday, February 16th & Saturday, February 17th

The Helium Comedy Club will be filled with laughter as well when stand-up act Justin Willman comes to town. The magician and comedian will be taking over the comic venue for two nights this weekend. No stranger to the stage, Willman previously had his own Comedy Central feature “Sleight of Mouth” in 2015.

10. Story Time at the Lodge

Where: Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest, 121 N. Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 11:30AM

Each Saturday, through March 3rd, the Blue Cross RiverRink will be participating in a wonderful partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia. Storytime at The Lodge features many local actors and performers. Bring your entire family out to listen to some great literary classic around the fire and sip on complimentary hot chocolate and snacks.

11. Chinese New Year Celebrations

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, February 17th, 10AM and Sunday, February 18th, 4PM-7PM

There will be several eateries and establishments celebrating the Lunar New Year this weekend. The Buddakhan Chinese New Year Brunch is this Sunday starting at 10:30AM. The day before, stop by the Reading Terminal Market for food demonstrations, music, and dancing. Also on Saturday there will be a Chinese New Year dumpling making event in Chinatown.

12. West Philly Indoor Flea Market

Where: 5151 Cedar Ave.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 12PM-6PM

For those looking for amazing collectibles and one-of-a-kind pieces for the house, your family, or workspace, this flea market is for you. The West Philly Flea Market is a free and open mercantile event. There will be tons of jewelry, home furnishings, candles, signature items, and more.

13. Winterfest Live!

Where: XFINITY Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 2PM-7PM

XFINITY Live! will be hosting a tasting event like no other this weekend. Winterfest Live! is an ultimate craft beer and music festival. The annual drinking soiree has tons of local and international brews. There will be food available, live music and DJs, and drink specials.

14. Discover Your Wine Style

Where: Wine School of Philadelphia, 109 S. 22nd St.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 4PM-6PM

The Wine School of Philadelphia will be hosting a Wine 101 class this weekend. The institution frequently holds these sampling and informative instructional classes. Here you’ll learn the ins and outs wines from all over the globe. Stop by the school and hone your palate.

15. Philadelphia Orchestra

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 8PM

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s enthralling season is in full swing. This Saturday night come to Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center to hear classical acts Joshua Bell and Cristian Macelaru. The orchestra will be playing Wieniawski’s romantic Violin Concerto No. 2 and several other memorable pieces.

16. Børns

Where: Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 8:30PM

American singer-songwriter Børns will be playing at the Electric Factory this Saturday night. Last month the indie pop and alternative act released his second studio album Blue Madonna. The album featured background vocals from the hitmaker Lana Del Rey. Come hear the “Electric Love” singer at this historic venue.

17. Philly Loves Dilla

Where: Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave.
When: Saturday, February 17th, 9PM

Johnny Brenda’s will be commemorating the life and legacy of rapper and producer J Dilla. In its 6th year, the event will feature great merchandise, a special guest DJ, several pieces of art, and more. DJ Mike Nyce Skratch Bastid will be blowing the audience away with each track.

18. SugarHouse Casino Wine & Spirits ‘Fest’alcular

Where: SugarHouse Casino, 1001 N. Delaware Ave.
When: Sunday, February 18th, 12PM-4PM

SugarHosue Casino has always been a great place to cut loose and enjoy a fun night out. This Sunday the event center will be buzzing with the Wine & Spine ‘Fest’alcular. There will be dozens of free, VIP, and unlimited sampling booths. The festival will have plenty of wines, whiskeys, ciders, rums, and more classic selections.
