What’s happening in Philly this weekend: April 27-29

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Closing this Week: Cinedephia Film Festival

Cinedelphia Film Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Monday, April 30th

The 2018 Cinedelphia Film Festival ends this weekend. The city-wide celebration of films and productions related to Philadelphia has beautifully highlighted the area for the entire month. There will be shorts, feature films, documentaries, live radio tapings, discussion panels, and Q&A groups, and more.

2. Closing This Week: Philly Celebrates Jazz

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Friday, April 30th

Philadelphia is one of the signature cities that merges art, music, culture, fashion, and entertainment seamlessly. Through the entire month of April, The City of Brotherly Love has been hosting several events celebrating the wonderful genre of Jazz. Don’t miss out on the last weekend of live performances, discussions, parties, and gatherings.

3. Closing This Week: Noises Off 

Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Wednesday, April 29th

The Walnut Street Theatre’s run of the raucous comedy Noises Off is coming to an end. The renowned theater heralded a production of Michael Frayn’s hit on its stage for months. Come see these great performers and this play about the ups and downs of a production’s opening night.

4. Philly Tech Week 

Where: Various Locations
When: Friday, April 27th-Saturday, May 5th

Philly Tech Week will be bringing the best and innovation, futurism, and technology to the region for the next week. Presented by Comcast, this spanning expo will have discussions, contests, Q&A panels, demonstrations, gaming collectives, special happy hours, and plenty of after parties at several hot spots in the city.

5. Beer Garden Openings 

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through the end of the seasons

Parks On Tap and Independence Beer Garden have officially opened their establishments for the Spring and Summer seasons! Also, this weekend PHS Pop Up will be doing a soft opening before they have their grand openings next weekend. Come to any of these amazing locations for great drink specials, a serene atmosphere, and great food.

>6. Penn Relays

Where: Franklin Field, 235 S. 33rd St.
When: Thursday, April 26th-Saturday, April 28th

The 2018 Penn Relays are this weekend. The oldest track and field competition in the country will be the main attraction of a busy weekend in the city. Athletes from around the world from every level of track & field will be battling it out tat this prestigious sporting event. Bring your entire family out to see these vigorous trials of athleticism and sportsmanship.

7. Phillies Weekend

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Park Way
When: Friday, April 27-Sunday, April 29th

The Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series this weekend. There will be several promotions from the organization each night including a free post-game concert by Zedd this Sunday at the stadium and the Phillie’s Phanatic Birthday. Above all else, there will be some phenomenal baseball on display by the 14-8 club.

8. Carmen

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, May 6th

The famed and celebrated opera Carmen is coming to the City of Brotherly Love for the next week. Georges Bizet’s stellar opera following Carmen, a Spanish woman who’s passionate love triangle turns deadly. Come see this “wisting tale of romance, deceit, and disaster” all set to the masterful music of Bizet.

9. The Sound of Music 

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, April 29th

Speaking of classic and famed productions, The Sound of Music will be front-and-center on the Merriam Theater stage this weekend. Broadway Philadelphia presents a rendering that will bring this tale to life like never before. Sustained by fantastic and talented performers, this beloved musical has it all. The sounds of “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “Edelweiss” will be beautifully filling the venue.

10. Dinos After Dark

Where: The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, April 27th, 5PM-8PM

The fourth Friday of the month transitions The Academy of Natural Sciences into an after-hours fun after-hours hangout. The museum will give you the chance to meet the live animals that reside in the institution, offers gallery access, and will have plenty of activities. Stop by the indoor beer garden before you walk around this invigorating museum.

11. Twilight in the Gardens

Where: Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St.
When: Friday, April 27th, 7PM-10PM

Another principal piece of the sunny season in the city is also returning this weekend. Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens series Twilight in the Gardens will be the place to this Friday. Bring your food and drinks to this artistic space and take in the sights and sounds. There will be live music and hands-on artistic demonstrations.

12. Parkway Science Carnival 

Where: Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, 222 North 20th St.
When: Saturday, April 28th, 10AM-4PM

One of the culminating moments of the  Philadelphia Science Festival is the Parkway Science Carnival. This Saturday this free and exciting event will have tons of things for your entire family to enjoy. There will be mindblowing demonstrations, experiments, games and prizes, and live entertainment.

13. Go West Craft Fest at The Woodlands

Where: The Woodlands, 4000 Woodland Ave. 
When: Saturday, April 28th, 11AM-5PM

The beautiful landscape of The Woodlands will provide a great backdrop for this community event. If you’re looking for signature collectibles, handmade artisan pieces, ceramics, jewelry, soaps, candles, scents, and more come out to the Go West Craft Fest. There will be food merchants, children’s events, live music, and acrobatic performances.

14. Fairmount Avenue Arts Crawl

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, April 28th, 12PM-4PM

Another free to enter event this weekend is the Fairmount Avenue Arts Crawl. Thousands come out each year to peruse the dozens of exhibitors on the avenue. There will be paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and more up for grabs. The family-friendly event will also have live music entertainment, crafts, face painting,  and sidewalk chalk art.

15. Philly Margarita Rumble

When: Saturday, April 28th, 12PM
Where: The Schmidt’s Commons, 1001 N. 2nd St.

Fifteen of the best bars and restaurants will vie for the title of best margarita at the Margarita Rumble. Come out to see this mixologist war, an assembly of food trucks at the location, and a fun time. There will be VIP tickets available to get into the fiesta an hour early before everyone else. The fiesta will benefit PAWS, an organization that aids homeless and at-risk animals and is a Craft Hospitality event.

16. Center City Jazz Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, April 28th, 1PM-7PM

The 2018 Center City Jazz Festival is this Saturday. All throughout the city, there will be dazzling live music performances by talented vocalist and musicians. Be sure to stop by any of the various locations on the itinerary so your weekend can be elevated by this wonderful music genre.

17. Cypher City: Top Five 

Where: Concourse Dance Bar, 1635 Market St.
When: Saturday, April 28th, 3PM-8PM

Cypher City will be taking over Concourse Dance Bar this Saturday night. This countrywide lyricist and r&b artists competition will be broadcasted across social media platforms. These talented artists will be taking their words to new heights in this all out hip-hop and r&b battle.

18. Flavors On the Avenue

Where: East Passyunk Ave.
When: Sunday, April 29th, 11AM-5PM

Flavors On the Avenue will be filling the streets of South Philadelphia with the savory aroma of fine cuisine and delicious delights. This Sunday will feature five blocks of amazing street food, summer beverages, craft beers, live music, sidewalk sales at shops, and more.

19. El Carnaval de Puebla

Where: Begins 16th St and Washington Ave.
When: Sunday, April 29th, 8AM-6PM

Emerging from the ashes of last year’s cancellation, this year’s El Carnaval de Puebla is back! The festival usually draws thousands into the streets of Philadelphia is a celebration of the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Ther will be plenty of bearded masks, Mexican food trucks,  live Latin bands, beaded capes, headdresses, and other costumes at this lively and festive cultural holiday.

20. Philadelphia Beard Festival

Where: The Schmidt’s Commons, 1001 N. 2nd St.
When: Sunday, April 29th, 12PM-6PM

Come back to The Schmidt’s Commons this Sunday for the 2nd Annual Philadelphia Beard Festival. There will be a beer garden at the pavilion, whiskey tastings, the Epic Beard Contest, live music, beard grooming stations, a speed dating event, lawn games, and more.

21. Love Across The USA: Artist Talk

Where: The Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.

When: Sunday, April 29th, 12PM-1PM

This Sunday come to The Barnes Foundation for an engrossing commentary of Love Across the USA by New York-based artist Olek.  The discussion shines a light on her 50-state community public art project that centers on important women in United States history. Guest can also go over to the Mural Arts Studio at the Barnes to see the various crochet squares being sewn togethre by members of the communtiy. This is a free event.
