What’s happening in Philly this weekend: August 3-5

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Phillies Weekend

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Runs through Sunday, August 5th

The Phillies are sitting pretty on top of the NL East. This weekend they will be taking on the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. The team will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their 2008 World Series. Shane Victorino will be having his retirement ceremony this Friday. Wall of Fame inductions for the late Roy Halladay and Phils exec Pat Gillick will be highlighted this Saturday. There will be a massive reunion of the 2008 team at Sunday’s game.

2. BlackStar Film Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, August 5th

The Black Star Film Festival continues this week and runs through Sunday. The cultural celebration will feature a massive number of documentaries, shorts,  and feature films celebrating the African diaspora. There will be a selection of 60 films made by black creators from around the globe on display.

3. Black Panther

Where: Dilworth Park, 1 S 15th St.
When: Friday, August 3rd, 8:30PM

2018 blockbuster and billion-dollar enterprise, Black Panther will be screened at Dilworth Park this Friday. The free screening is a part of the Summer Pictures in the Park series. The first 100 people will receive free popcorn thanks to TD Bank. Bring a blanket and some friends out for a night of action and entertainment.

4. Friday Night Salsa

Where: The Schmidt’s Commons, 1001 N 2nd St.
When: Friday, August 3rd, 7PM-10PM

Wanda Rivera Y Su Orquesta will be playing live at The Schmidt’s Commons this Friday night. A night of dancing and excitement will be on the menu at Salsa Night. The open piazza will be full of people with rhythm and looking for a fun night out. Food and drinks provided by Gunners Run & El Camino Real Philadelphia at this event that will have free Salsa instructionals and a dance party.

5. Old City First Friday

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, August 3rd, 5PM-9PM

Each Frist Friday of the month the Old City District of Philadelphia opens several of its shops and galleries for special features. Over 40 galleries will have exhibitions, gallery access, events, and more. Many restaurants in the vicinity will have specials and discounted menu options. The streets will be filled with live music, artisans, vendors, merchants, performers, and more.

6. Fishtown First Friday

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, August 3rd

Old City isn’t the only neighborhood celebrating the first Friday of the month. Fishtown will be brimming with art, culture, food, and more. August First Friday! will feature special Happy Hours, a pop-up fashion launch, live body painting,  DJ parties, and several other activities.

7. Weekend at the Barnes

Where:  Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Friday, August 3rd-Sunday, August 5th

The Barnes Foundation continues its First Friday! series this weekend. Jazz and swing music will fill this Institute this Friday night when trombonist Mariel Bildsten and her quartet perform. musicianship and jazz vocals for an unbelievable night of live music. This Sunday is PECO Free First Sunday Family Day: Story Sharing. Guests will get free access to the museum including the immersive exhibit Renoir: Father and Son/Painting and Cinema. There will be live cultural performances, storytime, crafts, and more this Sunday.

8. Weekend at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, August 3rd-Sunday, August 5th

At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, pianist Farid Barron bringing his fantastic musicianship and melodies from the early 1900’s to the museum this Friday. This Sunday is also pay-what-you-wish at the art collective. Don’t forget the special HeART Summer: A Philadelphia Museum of Art and Barnes Escape deal. Now through August 31st, you can purchase a combo ticket for access to the Barnes and the Art Museum for just $40 (a $10 savings).

9. Friday Night Improv

Where: Philly Improv Theater, 2030 Sansom St
When: Friday, August 3rd, 7PM

The N Crowd has been dubbed “Philadelphia’s premiere improv troupe” by Philadelphia Style Magazine. Since their creation in 2005, the group of comedians has been an improv marvel. Taking audience’s hints and suggestions, this creative show will offer you an interactive experience life no other.

10. Krystyna Hutchinson & Corinne Fisher

Where: Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Sansom St.
When: Thursday, August 2nd-Saturday, August 4th

Hosts Krystyna Hutchinson and Corinne Fisher will be bringing their humor and stories to Helium Comedy Club this weekend. Creators of the “Guys We F#@$!D” podcast, which started out as convos with their exes, this show has become a successful series rooted in hilarious conversations full of edge, raw opinions, and raunchy tales.

11. Birdtalker

Where: The Foundry Philadelphia, 29 E Allen St.
When: Friday, August, 3rd, 8PM

Nashville folk group Birdtalker will be gracing the stage at The Foundry Philadelphia this Friday night. The harmonious and talented band jumped on the landscape with their 2016 single “Heavy” and EP Just This. Their full-length debut album One was released in June 2018.

12. Keith Urban

Where: BB&T Pavillion, 1 Harbour Blvd.
When: Friday, August 3rd, 7:30PM

Nicole Kidman’s husband will be performing at BB&T Pavilion this Friday night. That’s right, country megastar Keith Urban will bring his Graffiti U World Tour to the City of Brotherly Love. As one of the genre’s most decorated and successful acts, this countless award winner will certainly rock the amphitheater this weekend.

13. Beres Hammond & Friends

Where: Electric Factory,  421 N 7th St.
When: Saturday, August 4th, 9PM

Jamaican reggae singer Beres Hammon will be playing at the Electric Factory this Saturday night. With almost twenty solo albums on record, this Grammy nominee and Billboard Reggae chart-topper will have a wide selection of songs to choose from to get the crowd going.

14. Roller Boogie

Where: Blue Cross RiverRink, 101 S Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, August 4th, 7PM-11PM

The summer series Roller Boogies continues this Saturday at the Blue Cross RiverRink. This is a throwback skate party unlike any other in the city. DJs will be playing classics, spinning vinyl, at this fun event for all ages. TD members receive $2 off admission with their bank cards, Independence Blue Cross cardholder get free admission for themselves and three people, and military and first responders get free admission as well.

15. Philadelphia Freedoms

Where: Daskalakis Athletic Center, 3301 Market St.
When: Sunday, August 5th, 2PM

The Philadelphia Freedoms will be putting on a show this Sunday afternoon at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center. The display of professional tennis will be unmatched as they host the World Team Tennis Finals. Tickets are only $20 at this event.

16. ACANA Festival

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, August 5th, 2PM-8PM

The PECO Multicultural Festival Series will continue its community enhancing events and cultural showcases this weekend.  ACANA Festival will include an entire day off of music, performances, food, games, arts, vendors,  and more. This family-friendly event will be heralding the achievements and rich history springing from the African diaspora.

17. 2nd Street Festival

Where: 2nd and Spring Garden St. to 2nd and Germantown Ave.
When: Sunday, August 5th, 12PM-10PM

Now in its 10th year, the 2nd Street Festival will be taking over Northern Liberties this Sunday. The area’s local shops, restaurants, and bars will all be bursting with special deals and storefront attractions. There will also be live music, food, and much more. Artisans will be out selling handmade goods. This free event will have food trucks, merchants, and includes more than 100 vendors.

18. Eagles Training Camp

Where: Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way
When: Sunday, August 5th, 7PM

This Sunday the first of the two open practices for the 2018 Super Bowl champions kicks into gear. Lincoln Financial Field will be packed at this soldout fan festival. The players will be running through a full practice in front of a capacity crowd of the bleeding green faithful.

19. Us The Duo

Where: Theatre of the Living Arts, 334 South St.
When: Sunday, August 5th, 8PM

Viral sensations Us The Duo will be bringing their 2018 The Together Tout to the Theatre of the Living Arts this Sunday night. The folk-pop duo features husband-and-wife Michael and Carissa Alvarado. The pair began their skyrocketing career via the beloved app Vine. After years of uploads, they amassed almost 5 million followers. Taking their vocals to the studio, the couple signed a major deal with Republic Records in that time. Come see these vocal and musical talents this Sunday.
