What’s happening in Philly this weekend: October 5-7

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Closing This Week: Center City Restaurant Week

When: Runs through Friday, October 5th

Center City Restaurant Week ends this Sunday. This amazing culinary offering is very wallet-friendly and is palate pleasing. Diners can get access to $20 lunches and $35 dinners for the next week. Stop by your favorite Center City eatery to get in on the deals before it’s too late.

2. Indigenous Peoples Weekend

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, October 7th

The Museum of the American Revolution will be celebrating Indigenous People Weekend for the next few days. There will be historical chronicles and narrative brought to life through discussions and arts. The museum will also be open for gallery access, will host a story time, host Native dancers, have cultural panels, and more. Bartram’s Garden and Mural Arts Philadelphia will be celebrating as well this Sunday. Come to Awbury Arboretum for a Native-American meal.

3. Design Philadelphia

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Saturday, October 13th

Philadelphia hosts this highly anticipated and innovative festival each year. Design Philadelphia will showcase great feats in architecture. There will be urban design, furniture design, textiles, industrial pieces, lighting features, landscape exhibits, graphic design, and more at this fascinating event.

4. A Jack-O’-Lantern Experience 

Where: West Fairmount Park, 4160 Horticultural Dr.
When: Runs through Sunday, October 28th

The Glow: A Jack O’ Lantern Experience is a one-of-a-kind spectacle for the entire area. A sea of carved pumpkins line the streets as you walk along the trail. There are different specialized events in the park during the series and some of the most famous celebrities can be found etched into the orange faces of these seasonal treasures.

5. Movie Screenings

When: Runs through Sunday, October 7th

As the Fall ramps up, don’t miss your opportunity to catch many of the outdoor screenings in the city each week. This Saturday night catch the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Schmidt’s Commons. Hocus Pocus will be screened at the Prince Theater this Thursday and Friday. There will also be a double feature at the Betsy Ross House to round out this Halloween-themed weekend.

6. Love Never Dies

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, October 7th

Broadway Philadelphia brings a special run of Love Never Dies to the Academy of Music this week. The production is the mesmerizing sequel to  Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, which is one of the most successful musicals of all time. Come see the unfolding of this great love story.

7. Old City First Friday

When: Friday, October 5th

Each First Friday of the month Old City opens its galleries and studios for a little fun. Several participating spaces will have painting collection, wood workings, sculptures, furniture, metal works, and more all throughout several buildings. The workings are landscape shifting, contemporary, and visually stunning.

8. Fishtown First Friday

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, October 5th

Old City isn’t the only neighborhood celebrating the first Friday of the month. Fishtown will be brimming with art, culture, food, and more. October First Friday! will feature special Happy Hours, launch parties, art installations,  DJ parties, and several other activities.

9. The Barnes Foundation Weekend

Where: The Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, October 5th-Sunday, October 7th

The Barnes Foundation’s First Friday soiree is this Friday. The series of jamborees always has great live music, cocktails, gallery access, and more. Glenn Crytzer’s New Yorkers is a six-piece ensemble that will be playing Jazz Age pieces from the 1930’s and 1940’s. This Saturday will be a day-long Philadelphia Museum of dance. There will also be a free block party on Sunday with live music, food trucks, dancing, a beer garden, and more.

10. First Friday Salsa

Where: The Schmidt’s Commons, 1001 N 2nd St.
When: Friday, October 5th, 7PM

This Friday night, come out to The Schmidt’s Commons for First Friday Salsa. The open-air piazza apace will be filled with instructors giving free salsa lessons. After the workshop is over the area will turn into a full-on dance party with live music, entertainment, and more.

11. Havana Nights

Havana Nights: A Celebration of Cuban Music & Food

Where: World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.
When: Friday, October 5th, 8PM

World Cafe Live’s monthly Havana Nights celebration takes place this Friday night. The musical treasure will have cultural food and a live band at this event. Come to this free celebration and listen to Conjunto Philadelphia add some flare and excitement to your Friday night.

12. BORICUA, BARRIO, BARRO 

Where: Taller Puertorriqueno, INC,  2600 N. 5th St.
When: Friday, October 5th, 5:30PM-8PM

Roberto Lugo’s BORICUA, BARRIO, BARRO opens at Taller Puertorriqueno this week. This Friday there will be a free opening night reception to celebrate the ceramic artist’s first solo exhibition at Taller. The cultural activist, potter, poet, and educator’s work will have you marveling.

13. Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival

Where: Kelly Drive between Strawberry Mansion Hill and Fountain Green Drives
When: Saturday, October 6th, 8AM-5:30PM

The 2018 Dragon Boat Festival is this Saturday. Come to the Schuylkill Banks to see 20 paddlers, drummers, and others steer this long boats on the water. This will be will be a great showcase of teamwork as the paddlers work in unison to splice the water and lead their teams to victory.

14. Insane Inflatable 5K Philadelphia

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Saturday, October 6th, 8:30AM- 1PM

Citizens Banks Park will be filled with inflatable obstacles this Saturday. Come out to test your might, strength, and endurance in this 5K course. This fun event will have vendors, music, plenty of activities, and more.

15. Midtown Village Fall Festival

Where: Chestnut Street from Broad to 12th streets, Sansom Street from 13th to 12th streets, and 13th Street from Locust to Chestnut streets
When: Saturday, October 6th, 12PM- 8PM

The 2018 Midtown Village Fall Festival is this Saturday afternoon. This free to enter gathering will have food, drinks, and plenty of shops open for business. Come out for the splendor of local arts, crafts, collectibles, and more being peddled by area merchants. Thousands have been known to navigate through the streets each year at this event.

16. Subaru Fall Festival

Where: Greensgrow Farms, 2501 E. Cumberland St.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 10AM- 4PM

Greensgrow Farms will be hosting this free and community enriching event. Subaru and the farm have teamed up to provide harvest dishes, live music, crafts, games, and plenty of farmhouse fun. There will be an apple pie contest, cider pressing, a visit from the Phillie Phanatic, and more for the whole family.

17. Revolutionary Germantown Festival

Where: Cliveden, 6401 Germantown Ave.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 10AM- 4PM

Historic Germantown’s house Cliveden will be the setting of the Revolutionary Germantown Festival this Saturday. There will be battle reenactments, impersonators of great figures in history, speeches, recognition of how local events shaped the war, and much more. The event will end with a Battle Bash that includes food, drinks, games, and music.

18. PAWS Mutt Strut

Where: The Navy Yard, 4500 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 9 AM (registration opens) 11AM (walk begins)

The Navy Yard will be hosting the PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) 11th annual Mutt Strut this Saturday morning. Last year the event raised nearly $125,000. There will be a 1.5-mile walk, a Halloween costume contest, a talent contest, an agility course, live music, food trucks, games, and so much more. Bring your dog out to The Navy Yard and show them off for a great cause.

19. King of Prussia Beerfest Royale

Where:  160 N. Gulph Rd. King of Prussia, PA
When: Thursday, October 4th and Saturday, October 6th

It will be beer o’clock this weekend at the King of Prussia Mall. Come out to Beerfest Royale this Thursday and Saturday. There will be a tremendous happy hour and massive sampling events. The drinking celebration will have live music, plenty of food vendors, and a multitude of craft beers and cocktails.

20. Roxtoberfest

Where: Ridge Avenue between Lyceum Avenue and Leverington Avenue in Roxborough.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 12PM-6PM

Roxborough will be having its own intriguing Oktoberfest party this Saturday. There will be food trucks, vendors, live music stages, beer gardens, games, and more at this free to enter event. The  community sidewalk jamboree will also have carnival games and several engaging activities

21. High Harvest Biergarten

Where: Tired Hands High Harvest Biergarten, 2213 Frankford Ave.
When: Every Wednesday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday through the season

Tired Hands Brewing Company will be hosting a two biergartens each week. The Kensington company will have plenty of brews, food, live entertainment, and more. Come choose from a wide variety of IPAs which blend several different flavors.

22. 23rd St. Armory Oktoberfest

Where: 23rd Street Armory, 22 S. 23rd St.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 1PM-5PM and 7:30PM-11:30PM

The 23rd Street Armory will be fueling the area with German beers and cultural cuisine all weekend long. There will be live music each day of this event. There will be four overall sessions during the three-day event in which up to 1,600 people will have the option to drink a multitude of samples.

23. J. Cole

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, October 6th, 7:30PM

Young Thug, Jaden Smith, and  Kill Edward & Earthgang will be opening for J. Cole this Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. The KOD Tour will be officially taking over South Philadelphia. Hip-hop fans will be coming out in droves to hear this award-winning and critically acclaimed rapper light up the arena floor.

24. Philadelphia Open Studios Tour

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, October 14th

Each year several participating studios in the city open their doors and gives the public a glimpse into their halls. Open Studio Tour allows many curious souls and art lovers to peruse creators in their habitat. You’ll be able to see them in their spaces painting, sculpting, sketching, and more. Finished work and gallery pieces will also be on display.

25. Please Touch Museum Birthday

Where: Please Touch Museum, 4231 Avenue of the Republic
When: Sunday, October 7th, 11AM- 5PM

The family-friendly Please Touch Museum will be celebrating its birthday this Sunday. There will be a mascot reveal, giant games, cake and ice cream puffs paintings, storytime, a super fun dance party, and so much more.

26. Eagles vs. Vikings

Where: Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way
When: Sunday, October 7th, 4:25PM

The Birds will be looking to bounce back when they take on the Minnesota Vikings at the Linc this Sunday afternoon. Minnesota fans I’m sure will leave with complaints and snickers as they crawl back to The City of Brotherly love. Bring your energy, cheers, and boos to the game and watch as Carson Wentz and the rest of the squad soar to another victory.

27. Old City Fest

Where: 3rd and Arch Streets
When: Sunday, October 7th, 12PM- 6PM

The always popular Old City Festival is this Sunday. Old City District will be swimming with the masses as they come out to eat, shop and browse the stocks of local vendors and stores, watcha fashion show, and admire the musical performances. This free to enter event will have a family fun zone and more

28. Outfest

Where: 13th St. and Locust St.
When: Sunday, October 7th, 12PM- 6PM

Philly Pride will be on full display this Sunday at Outfest 2018. In its 28th year, the event will have vendors and several local restaurants participating in the Gayborhood area. Last years thousands came out to see the 160+ organizational display to celebrate National Coming Out Day.
