What’s happening in Philly this weekend: July 12-14

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Closing Soon: Chinese Lantern Festival

Where: Franklin Square, 200 N. 6th St
When: Runs through Sunday, June 14

For the past several months, the foundations and grounds of Franklin Square have been filled with 28 all-new traditional Chinese lanterns. This attraction, highlighting these innovative lighting structures, was so popular that its Philly run got extended. This weekend will be your last chance to be dazzled and amazed.

2. Phillies vs. Nationals

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Friday, July 12 through Sunday, July 14

The Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the Washington Nationals this weekend in a three-game series. There will be fireworks after the games on Friday and Saturday. Ryan Howard’s retirement ceremony will take place before Sunday’s game. All of you local baseball fans, come out to Citizens Bank Park to cheer the Phillies as they go to war with their NL East rival.

3. Cheyney McKnight at the Museum of the American Revolution

Where: Museum of the American Revolution, 101 S. 3rd St
When: Runs through Saturday, July 13

Historical reenactor Cheyney McKnight, from Not Your Momma’s History, will be at the Museum of the American Revolution through this Saturday. This will be a historical production of storytelling, performances, and more. The display dives into African American women’s headwraps and spiritual practices, African adornments, foodways, and medicine.

4. BalletX Summer Series

Where: Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St
When: Runs through Sunday, July 21

BalletX continues its 2019 summer series this week. Come to the Wilma Theater to see some stunning choreography by some tremendous performers. Three great choreographers have put together dynamic productions full of rhythm, alluring movement, drama, and more.

5. Beer Festivals & Gardens

Where: Various locations
When: Various times

Trails on Tap will be taking over Valley Forge National Park this weekend. There will be bike & kayak shares at this roaming beer garden. This Saturday is the Wizards and Witches Beer Festival at Arts Ballroom. It’s also Wine Slushie Weekend at Chaddsford Winery. Parks on Tap is also at Pastorius Park this week.

6. Aries Spears

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St
When: Through Saturday, July 13

Comedian and actor Aries Spears will be doing a multi-night set at Punch Line Philly this week. He’s been featured in Mad TV, Showtime’s The Underground, The Proud Family, The Best Damn Sports Show Period, and several other productions. Come see this act with tremendous timing and raw commentary any night over the next few days.

7. The Food Trust’s Market

Where: Cherry Street Pier, 121 N. Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Runs through Saturday, November 16th

The brand behind the widely successful Night Markets brings you this tremendous Saturday open-air series. The Food Trust’s Market begins this Saturday. Shop for the best produce in the region each Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., summer through fall.

8. Philadelphia Marathon Weekend Training Run

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
When: Saturday, July 13, 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Calling all runners! Join Bart Yasso, Mark Sullivan (Runner of all 25 Philadelphia Marathons), and our friends at PHILADELPHIA RUNNER for a training session this Saturday. Bart will be kicking off this training run with distances of three (3), six (6), or 10 miles. You don’t need to be a marathon runner to join. Choose your distance and then come hang out until 11:00 a.m. at River Field Park. There will be music, food, drinks, and giveaways.

9. Blueberry Festival

Where: Linvilla Orchards, 137 W. Knowlton Rd, Media, PA
When: Saturday, July 13, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.

This weekend in the Linvilla Orchards Blueberry Festival. There will be blueberry picking sessions, pie eating contests, face painting, and more. Your family can enjoy costumed characters, storytime, hay and train rides, and plenty of other activities. The rain date is Sunday, July 14, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.

10. 2nd Saturday Philly Art Walk

When: Saturday, July 13, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Streets Dept’s 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours are a signature highlight each month. Every second Saturday Conrad Benner will be hosting a walking tour of Philadelphia’s most stunning street art, murals, and graffiti. This will be an immersive and informative tour full of colorful designs and great conversation.

11. Macy’s Family Fun Day

Where: African American Museum in Philadelphia, 701 Arch St
When: Saturday, July 13, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This Saturday, bring all your loved ones out to the African American Museum for Macy’s Family Fun Day. There will be a braiding station, creative wearable weavings, performances and more at this free event for all ages.

12. Sistahs in Business Expo

Where: 3801 Market St
When: Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

There will be an endless swell of vendors at this cultural and celebratory expo this weekend. Thousands of people will be in attendance at Sistahs in Business. The keynote speakers for this year’s event are activist Tamika Mallory, co-president of the Women’s March, and entrepreneur and television personality Yandy Smith.

13. 40th Street Summer Series

Where: 40th and Walnut St
When: Saturday, July 13, 6 p.m.

The 40th Street Summer Series offers up fantastic live music each month. This Saturday Voice of Africa with The Center for Creative Works will be featured act. Come out for this festivity of joy, music, and togetherness which will have food and drinks for sale.

14. An Evening with Leslie Jones

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St
When: Saturday, July 13, 7 p.m.

Emmy nominee and SNL writer and cast member, Leslie Jones, will be performing at the Merriam Theater this Saturday night. The 2017 BET Awards host and Summer and Winter Olympics correspondent, will be getting candid about her life and using her great stage presence to have you laughing in your seat.

15. Florida Georgia Line

Where: BB&T Pavillion, 1 Harbour Blvd, Camden, NJ
When: Saturday, July 13, 7 p.m.

Grammy, CMA, and Billboard award-winners Florida Georgia Line will be performing a the BBT&T Pavillion this weekend. The duo released its fourth studio album, Can’t Say I Ain’t Country, earlier this year. This will be a great night of music at this local amphitheater.

16. Rob Thomas

Where: The Met Philadelphia, 858 N. Broad St
When: Saturday, July 13, 8 p.m.

Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas will be live and front-and-center at The Met Philadelphia this Saturday night. The Grammy winner released his fourth solo project Chip Tooth Smile in April 2019. He will be bringing his famous vocals to his Philly fans this weekend.

17. EVOLVE 131: 10th Anniversary Celebration

Where: 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St
When: Saturday, July 13, 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

The 2300 Arena will host EVOLVE’s 10th anniversary show, and the event will also be streaming live on the WWE Network. Watch WWE superstars of tomorrow, and some of the best independent wrestling talent today, invade the old ECW Arena the night before WWE’s big Extreme Rules pay-per-view. Adam Cole defends his NXT Championship against Akira Tozawa. The hometown boy Drew Gulak will also be in the house as he takes on Matt Riddle. And Austin Theory will defend his EVOLVE Championship in a Winner Take All Match against WWN Champion, JD Drake.

18. Nuevofest 2019

Nuevofest 2019

Where: World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St
When: Sunday, July 14, 2:30 p.m.

WXPN, Afro Taino, and Visit Philly present this great cultural collective. Nuevofest 2019 will be brimming with the rhythmic sounds of eight fantastic Latin American acts. The Beachers, Kevin Johansen, Lady HD and more will be performing. This is an all-ages event that will have plenty of sizzling sounds, food, drinks, and an amazing inclusive atmosphere.

19. Barnes on the Block

Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Sunday, July 14, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The third annual Barnes on the Block! is this Sunday. There will be art installations from artist NDA, live glass blowing and sculpture work, and more. You can enjoy live music, food from Nick’s Roast Beef, the Cow and the Curd, Dock Street Brewery, and Lil’ Pop Shop. Giant Jenga, four square, freeze tag, and more will be the games of the day at this blowout festival! The event is free to attend but registration is required to access the museum.

20. Jazz in the Park

Where: Spruce Street Harbor Park, 301 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd
When: Sunday, July 14, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Come to Spruce Street Harbor Park for live music this Sunday. There waterfront colorful oasis will feature the smooth sounds of world-famous percussionist Arturo Stable. There will be food and drinks for purchase at nearby food trucks and stations.

21. Summer Gods Tour

When: Sunday, July 14, 7 p.m.

The Van’s Warped Tour may be in Atlantic City this year but, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your alternative fix this summer. Third Eye Blind and Jimmy Eat World will be performing this weekend at the Summer Gods Tour. This will be a great show to close out your weekend.

22. WWE Extreme Rules

WWE Extreme Rules

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St
When Sunday, July 14, 6:30 p.m.

This Sunday night, WWE brings Extreme Rules to the City of Brotherly Love. WWE superstar The Undertaker will be slamming the mats at this live-action wrestling event. The main superstars in action include Roman Reigns, Shane McMahon, Universal Champion Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, WWE Champion Kofi Kingston, United States Champion Ricochet, and many more.
