What’s happening in Philly this weekend: July 19-21

1. Closing Soon: BalletX Summer Series

BalletX continues will be closing its 2019 Summer Series this weekend. Highlights from the program include the world premiere of The Little Prince ballet and more. Come to the Wilma Theater to see some stunning choreography by some tremendous performers.

2. Closing Soon: Legally Blonde

Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St
When: Runs through Sunday, July 21

For the past two months, the hit musical Legally Blonde has been at the Walnut Street Theatre. The widely-successful film turned theater production is a can’t miss. Come see these phenomenal performers bring this Harvard-bound story to life.

3. The Oval Opens

Where: The Oval, 2451 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Runs through Sunday, August 18

This Friday is the opening day for The Oval. The ending loop of the parkway will be once again filling the area with food trucks, light structures, movie screenings, radio game shows, workshops, parties, and more. Hip-hop station Boom 103.9 playing at the double-decker Boom Box Bus beginning at 5 p.m., with drummers and stilt walkers from Radio One and UnityCommunity.com.

4. Philly Podcast Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Sunday, July 28

The 7tth Annual Philadelphia Podcast Festival begins this Friday. There will be over 50 featured podcasts recording live in the City of Brotherly Love over the next two weeks. The festival includes several other successful productions. This year’s venue will include the National Liberty Museum, World Cafe Live, Tattooed Mom, Indy Hall, and Victoria Freehouse.

5. Moon Landing 50th Anniversary Events

When: Running through Sunday, July 21

This week marked the 50th Anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11th Moon Launch. In celebration, several institutions and hubs in the city will be celebrating the triumph. The Franklin Institute will have a full day of events on Saturday. On the same day, The African American Museum in Philadelphia will be hosting an immersive Smithsonian film screening. The Mercer Museum welcomes you to enjoy some great activities in collaboration with its Making Astronauts: Bucks County to the Moon exhibit.

6. University City Dining Days

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, July 28

University City Dining Days will continue through this Sunday. Come to this famed section of the city for three-course meals for $15, $25, and $35. For those in the outer region, there are several other restaurant week options for you.

7. Ardmore Restaurant Week 

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, July 28

Ardmore Restaurant Week and began this week. The wallet-friendly restaurant weeks offer up three-course prix-fixed menus starting at just $15. Several restaurants, cafes, BYOB hot spots and more in the region will be participating in this great menu excursion.

8. Outdoor Movie Screenings

Where: Various locations
When: Run through Saturday, July 20

With the sun, comes plenty of opportunities to catch an outdoor movie screening in the city. This weekend, several screens will be drawing crowds. Captain Marvel at Dilworth Park will be live at Dilworth Park this Friday. On it’s opening night, The Oval will be screening Black Panther. and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be screened with live music by The Philadelphia Orchestra this Saturday at The Mann.

9. Beer Festivals & Gardens

When: Runs through Sunday, July 21

Along with film screenings, places to catch a brew, cocktails, and small plates also blossom in the city during the summer. Victory Beer’s #FLIPFLOPNATION beach party pop up is this Friday at Spruce Street Harbor Park. The 1st annual Philly Vegan Beer Fest will be hosted by the Philly Brewing Company this Saturday. This Saturday is also Summerfest Live! at Xfinity Live! This craft beer festival will feature samples from hundreds of beers at the entertainment venue. Through the week and weekend, you can stop by Trails on Tap and Parks on Tap.

10. Friday Nights at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Friday, July 19, 5 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Each Friday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a weekly Final Fridays series each week. The event merges music, art, cocktails, small plates, culture, and crafts. This Friday, folk duo Nickel&Rose will team up with violin-cello gospel duo SistaStrings for a lively set.

11. We the People Improv Festival

Philly native Paul F. Tompkins (Best Week EverBoJack Horseman) will be headling the 2019 We the People Improv Festival. There will be a series of comedic and improvisation troupes from around all over the country.

12. Tony Roberts

When: runs through Sunday, July 21

BET’s ComicView and Def Comedy Jam alum Tony Roberts will be gracing the Helium Comedy Club stage this weekend. He’ll be doing a three-night stint at the famed local club. He’s been bringing the laughs to for decades and toured around the globe.

13. Latin History for Morons

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad Street
When: Runs through Saturday, July 20

Tony- and Emmy-winning actor and entertainer John Leguizamo will be performing at the Merriam Theater for two nights this weekend. Leguizamo is providing a unique, candid, and hilarious crash-course in Latinx history for stage audiences.

311 & Dirty Heads

Where: The Met Philadelphia, 858 N. Broad St
When: Friday, July 19, 7 p.m.

311 & Dirty Head will be playing at The Met Philadelphia this Friday night. With The Interrupters as the opening act, the alternative rock headliners will be playing many of their hits including tracks from their latest album Voyager. There’s no better way to spend a summer night than hearing this great act.

15. Bluegrass and Blueberries Festival

When: Runs through Sunday, July 21

The Bluegrass and Blueberries Festival will be taking over Peddler’s Village this weekend. From 10 am-6 pm on Saturday and Sunday, this music festival will have something for the entire family. There will be over 30 vendors on the location and 60 musicians hitting the stage.

16. Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival

When: Saturday, July 20, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The 13th Annual Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival is this Saturday. The theme of “Hometown Philly Sound” will bring the signature music of the city to the forefront. This day of free music will have plenty of food and activities.

17. Chicago Fire vs. Union

This Saturday, the MLS Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union take on the Chicago Fire at Talen Energy Stadium. The local team will be looking to notch their eleventh win of the season. Bring your enthusiasm, cheers, and passion to Chester, PA this Saturday.

18. Carly Rae Jepsen 

Carly Rae Jepsen – THE DEDICATED TOUR

When: Saturday, July 20, 8 p.m.

Carly Rae Jepsen brings her The Dedicated Tour to the Fillmore Philadelphia this Saturday night. The Grammy-nominee released her fourth studio album Dedicated in May of this year. The “Call Me Maybe” singer will bring her energy and rock the crowd all night long.

19. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St
When: Saturday, July 20, 8 p.m.

Come to the Wells Fargo Center this Saturday to see one of the top entertainers in the game. This Saturday night, Jennifer Lopez will be performing many of her chart-topping hits at the South Philly arena. The It’s My Party Tour will let the JLo faithful down.

20. Smart, Funny & Black with Amanda Seales 

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St
When: Sunday, July 21, 8 p.m.

Comedian, entertainer, actress, and DJ Amanda Seales will be front-and-center at the Merriam Theater this Sunday night. The wildly successful Small Doses with Amanda Seales podcast lead and Insecure act provides a live game show experience for black voices and African Amerian issues.

21. Jason Aldean

When: Sunday, July 21, 7:30 p.m.

Previous ACM “Entertainer of the Year” award-winner Jason Aldean will be at the BB&T Pavilion this Sunday. Kane Brown and Carly Pearce will also be electrifying the crowd at this amazing waterfront amphitheater.
