What’s happening in Philly this weekend: Sept. 6-8

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Closing Soon: Marvel 

Where: The Franklin Institute | 222 N. 20th St

When: Runs through Wednesday, September 11

The Franklin Institute’s immersive exhibition, Marvel, will come to a close next week. This will be the last weekend to catch weekend this amazing showcase that features “life-size scenes straight from the comic world”, concept sketches, artwork, props, interactive designs, and plenty more exciting activities.

2. Mural Arts Tours

When: Various times

Philadelphia has been called the “mural capital of the world.” With new stunning pieces unfolding in almost every corner, you may want the opportunity to hear the story behind the concepts and artists themselves. Mural Arts provides fun vehicle tours, city walking tours, train, segway, bike, and private group tours to enhance your experience and to gain in-depth knowledge about these phenomenal murals blossoming throughout the city. Over 45 new artworks have been added along tour routes. This is a great season to discover the wonder that the mural in the city has to offer.

3. Free Neighborhood Days

Where: The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University | 1900 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy

When: Runs through Sunday, September 22

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is rolling out the welcome mat to more than 204,000 West Philadelphia and Southwest Center City residents this September with an offer of free weekend admission. Free Neighborhood Days offers people who live in 19104, 19139, 19143 and 19146, free access to the museum. To participate in the Academy’s special free-admission offer, residents need only bring proof of residence showing their zip code or a Free Neighborhood Days postcard. Students must bring their last report card or student ID showing their zip code. Each household may receive up to four complimentary tickets.

4. Fringe Festival

Where: Various locations

When: Runs through Sunday, September 22

For almost the entire month of September, FringeArts’ Fringe Festival will be one of the main cultural and artistic events in the city each week. There will be dramatic preferences, discussions, dance displays, cabarets, musicals, sketches, comedic productions, and more.

5. Young Frankenstein 

Where: Walnut Street Theatre | 825 Walnut St

When: Runs through Sunday, October 20th

The Walnut Street Theatre will be hosting the wild and zany Young Frankenstein on several occasions through next month. The celebrated Brooks and Meehan musical, based on the hit film, features laughs and great fun. Don’t hesitate to come out for productions featuring talented and skilled actors.

6. AGAMA, Festival of Indian Classical Arts

Where: Merriam Theater | 250 S. Broad St

When: Runs through Sunday, September 8

Come to the Merriam Theater this weekend for AGAMA, Festival of Indian Classical Arts.  AGAMA, meaning handed down, highlights the wonderful culture and traditions of India. There will be live music performances, dances, spoken-word, and several other sensational segments.

7. Philadelphia Honey Festival

When: Runs through Sunday, September 8

The Philadelphia Honey Festival is this weekend. In its 10th year, this educational and fun triumph will teach the importance of honey bee preservation and more. There will be exhibits, Q&A sessions, honey extraction demonstrations, and more.

8. Old City First Fridays

Where: Various locations

When: Friday, September 6

It’s the First Friday of the month which means many of the eateries, bars, shops, galleries, and studios in Old City will be opening their doors for the area’s monthly celebrations. The activities include waterfront activities, clay workshops, a diverse range of studio access,  and much more.

9. Frankford Ave Frist Fridays

Where: Various locations

When: Friday, September 6

Old City isn’t the only neighborhood celebrating the first Friday of the month. Fishtown will be brimming with art, culture, food, and more. September First Friday! will feature special Happy Hours, pop up sales, comedy shows, DJ parties, and several other fun activities.

10. Chestnut Hill First Friday

Where: Various locations

When: Friday, September 6

Chestnut Hill has plenty of options for you all weekend long. There’s a great warehouse sale at local shops and more. Restaurants and stores will have extended hours and massive deals during its First Friday celebrations.

11. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Where: Dilworth Park | 1 S. 15th St

When: Friday, September 6 | 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

Dilworth Park’s Pictures in the Park will screen Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle this Friday night. The adventure project stars The Rock, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, and others. This visual marvel and magical feature will be projected right next to City Hall. The first 100 guests in attendance will receive free popcorn courtesy of TD Bank.

12. Havana Nights 

Where: World Cafe Live |  3025 Walnut St

When: Friday, September 6 | 9 p.m.

World Cafe Live’s monthly Havana Nights celebration takes place this Friday night. The musical treasure will have cultural food and a live band at this event. Come to this free celebration and listen to Conjunto Philadelphia add some flare and excitement to your Friday night.

13. Nico Santos

Actor and comedian Nico Santos will be doing a two-night stint at Punch Line Philly this weekend. The Superstore, Chelsea Lately, and Crazy Rich Asians entertainer will be bringing his signature brand of wild comedy to the city. This offer to spend your weekend in laughter is not a bad one.

14. Luenell

When: Runs through Saturday, September 7

The Helium Comedy Club will be hosting a special event this weekend when Luenell comes to town. The famed and hilarious actor and comedian will be performing at the popular laugh house for consecutive nights. Stop by to get the full essence of her unique storytelling and gut-busting jokes.

15. Brandi Carlile

When: Friday, September 6 | 8 p.m.

Three-time Grammy-award winner Brandi Carlile will be serenading The Mann Center audience this Friday night. Her fantastic vocals, musicianship, and poignant lyrics make Carlile one of the best live acts to see in entertainment. Don’t miss out on this tremendous performer.

16. CollegeFest

Where: Dilworth Park | 1 S. 15th St

When: Saturday, September 7 | 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Don’t let the 10 a.m. start time scare you away, this college-themed event will be going full throttle into the afternoon. College students simply have to show their I.D. to gain free access to countless museums and institutions in the city. The Philly PHLASH downtown loop will also be available to take students to various locations. There will be lawn games, prizes, giveaways, music, vendors, and more.

17. Family Football Funday

Where: The Deptford Mall Center Court | 1750 Deptford Center Rd | Deptford, NJ

When: Saturday, September 7th from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m

Family Football Funday will have Eagles cheerleaders, live entertainment, prizes, and more. Nelson Agholor will kick off the Eagles football season with Overtime Promotions. Agholor will be appearing from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy live entertainment, prizes, children’s activities, JSA authentication, autograph, and photo opportunities. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Kayden’s Korner Foundation. Kayden’s Korner is dedicated to the protection of children innocently involved in domestic custody challenges.

18. Northern Liberties Pop Up Festival

When: Saturday, September 7 | 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Come to Northern Liberties this Saturday for a sprawling beer garden, games, activities, multiple vendors, and tons of fun. The pop-up soiree will have live music, face painting, a karaoke contest, and so much more.

19. Doylestown Arts Festival

Where: Main & State Sts | Doylestown, PA

When: September 7-8

The 2019 Doylestown Arts Festival will be this Saturday and Sunday. There will be 160 juried artists, live music, DJs, food trucks, 5 music stages, and several other activities. Here you’ll be able to peruse the lineup of metal workers, printmakers, crafters, glassblowers, and others as they show off their amazing talents. This community spectacle is a great place to find one-0f-a kind treasures.

20. Goose Island Beer Co.’s  215 Block Party

Where: Franklin Music Hall |  421 N 7th St

When: Saturday, September 7 |  5 p.m.

Goose Island Beer Co. will be bringing their massive and blowout block party to the City of Philadelphia this Saturday.  Run The Jewels will be performing live on the Electric Factory outdoor stage. There will be more than 20 Goose Island beers available at this music fest for $3 each as well as food trucks with food from both Chicago and Philly.

21. Union vs Pumas UNAM

When: Saturday, September 7 | 7:30 p.m.

The Philadelphia Union will be hosting an international friendly this Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Come out to Talen Energy Stadium to cheer on the local team as they take on Mexico’s  Pumas UNAM. This will be a great matchup to see live and the atmosphere will be amazing.

22. Zac Brown Band

When: Saturday, September 7 | 7 p.m.

Zac Brown Band: The Owl Tour will be coming to the region this Saturday night. The CMT award winners will release their sixth studio album The Owl on September 20. The Atlanta-based southern-rock band has 13 number 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 Country Charts.

23. Marren Morris

Where: The Met Philadelphia | 858 N. Broad St.

When: Saturday, September 7 | 7 p.m.

Grammy-winner and country music star Marren Morris will be playing at The Met Philadelphia this Saturday night. The “The Middle” and “My church” hitmaker has great vocals and a wealth of talent. Don’t miss out on your chance to see her light up the stage.

24. Greenfest Philly

When: Sunday, September 8 | 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Since 2006 this event has been a highlight of Philadelphia. There will be over 100 vendors and exhibitors at this green-themed marketplace. The festival will offer up tons of ideas to live a free, healthier, and balanced lifestyle. There will be discussions, demonstrations, and plenty of activities at this free-to-enter wellness event.

25. Feria del Barrio

Where: North 5th Street from Huntingdon St to Somerset St

When: Sunday, September 8 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The 35th Annual Feria Del Barrio is this Sunday. Presented by NBC 10 & Telemundo 62, PECO, and others, this festival will be a symbol of the togetherness and closeness that the Latino culture permeates through the city. There will be live dancing, music, awards, media appearances, arts and crafts, and more.

26. Brazilian Day

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing| 101 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd

When: Sunday, September 8 | 1 p.m.- 7 p.m.

The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing will be buzzing with this fantastic cultural event this Sunday. PECO Multicultural Series will be hosting Brazilian Day, a wonderful soiree promoting the greatness of a rich and storied people. There will be traditional music, dancing, performances, workshops, and more.

27. Eagles Season Opener 

Where: Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way

When: Sunday, September 8, 1 p.m.

The chants of “Fly Eagles Fly” will be filling Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday afternoon. NFL football is finally back! The Eagles are ready to pounce on the division rivals and put on a show. Carson Wentz, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffrey, Fletcher Cox, Malcolm Jenkins, Zach Ertz, and the boys will all be rocking the house this weekend.

28. Jazz in the Park

Where: Spruce Street Harbor Park| 301 South Christopher Columbus Blvd

When:  Sunday, September 8 | 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

This Sunday come out to Spruce Street Harbor Park for live Jazz music. Sustained by Univest, this fantastic free summer series offers up an amazing lineup of entertainment each week. Trumpeter Arenetta Johnson will be playing on the waterfront and displaying her massive talent.
