What’s happening in Philly this Weekend: Feb. 21-23

1. Closing Soon: Contemporary Photography Exhibition IX

Sasha Phyars-Burgess and Guanyu Xu have won the ninth annual Contemporary Photography Competition and Exhibition competition.  Phyars-Burgess’ UNTITLED PART II & III (WE ALL HAVE TO MAKE COMPROMISES),  is a multimedia series that explores the cultural connotations and markers that come with looking at bodies, particularly black bodies. For Guanyu Xu’s series Parallel Rooms, he photographed complex installations that he situates secretly and temporarily in his parents’ home in Beijing, China. This weekend will be your last chance to see their exquisite work at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.

2. Closing Soon:  Winter at Dilworth Park

Where: Dilworth Park | 1 S. 15th St

When: Runs through Sunday, February 23

The Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink, Rothman Orthopaedics Cabin, and Wintergarden have been running several events throughout the season for months. This Sunday, those fun and family-friendly activities will come to a halt. Don’t miss your chance to stop by this Center City gem for one last time.

3. Black History Month Weekend Events

When: Runs through Sunday, February 23

With the last few weeks of Black History Month winding down, several locations in Philadelphia will be continuing their celebrations throughout the weekend. PAFA opens “Awakened In You”: The Collection of Dr. Constance E. Clayton this Friday. The new exhibition will feature more than 70 works by influential African American artists. This Saturday, stop by the Black History Month Cultural Fair.

4. Hello Dolly! at the Academy of Music

Where: Academy of Music | 240 S. Broad St

When: Runs through Sunday, March 1

Broadway Philadelphia brings this sensational production to the city this weekend. Hello Dolly! features memorable classic like “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” and several others. Winner of four Tony Awards, musical theater fans won’t want to miss this revival.

5. Symphonie fantastique with the Philadelphia Orchestra

Where: The Kimmel Center 300 S. Broad St

When: Runs through Saturday, February 22

The Philadelphia Orchestra will be performing Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2 this weekend. With Herbert Blomstedt as Conductor and Lise de la Salle on piano, these works of stellar composition and expression will be taken to new heights.

6. Open Studio Night

Where: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts | 118-128 N. Broad St

When: Friday, February 21 | 5-9 p.m.

This Friday night, head over to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for Open Studio Night. This annual event immerses you in the world of the institution’s undergraduate and graduate students. Studios will be open for students to display and discuss their work. This is a free event that will feature an afterparty in Tuttleman Sculpture Gallery. Camp Candle will perform.

7. Friday Nights at the Art Museum

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy

When: Friday, February 21 | 5-8:45 p.m.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds a special happy hour series each Friday. The gathering uniquely blends arts and music in this special clash of culture. Each week there’s small bites, beverages, cocktails, special gallery access, and live music. This weekend, folk singer-songwriter Laura Gibson will provide the live entertainment.

8. Good Good Comedy Theatre Weekend 

Good Good presents Sydnee Washington (Broad City)

Where: Good Good Comedy Theatre 215 N. 11th St

When: Runs through Sunday, February 23

The Good Good Comedy Theatre will be filled with laughter as well this weekend with several hilarious shows. Friday night includes Joke Bath: Comedy + Free Beer and The Comment Section: My Black is… Saturday night, Syndee Washington will take over the stage.

9. Ali Siddiq

Where: Punch Line Philly | 33 E. Laurel St 

When: Runs through Saturday, February 22

Ali Saddiq will be bringing all the laughs to Punch Line Philly this weekend. The former HBO’s Def Comedy Jam and Live from Gotham act has a long resume of entertaining masses of crowds. If you’re levity and jokes to your weekend, look no further.

10. Post Malone

When: Friday, February 21 | 8 p.m.

Rapper and songwriter Post Malone will be bringing his Runaway Tour to the Wells Fargo Center this Friday night. The “Goodbyes” and “White Iverson” hitmaker will have fans rocking all night long. Swae Lee and Tyla Yaweh will open the night.

11. Lil Baby 

Dope Shows Presents Lil Baby

Where: The Fillmore Philadelphia | 29 E. Allen St

When: Friday, February 21 | 8 p.m.

At the same time, “Woah”, “Yes Indeed” and “Drip Too Hard” rapper Lil Baby will be performing at The Fillmore Philadelphia. The concert venue will be swarmed with fans of the emerging Atlanta rapper.

12. NOTO Philadelphia 

Where: NOTO Philadelphia 1209 Vine St

When: Runs through Saturday, February 22

Through Saturday, February 22, NOTO Philadelphia will be celebrating its three-year anniversary. Famous DJs W&W and Chase B will be taking over at the popular complex this week. Blazing Rapper Lil Baby will be lighting up the stage on Friday for a blowout afterparty.

13. Weekend at the AAMP

Where: African American Museum in Philadelphia 701 Arch St

When: Runs through Sunday, February 23

The African American Museum in Philadelphia will be hosting several events this weekend. This  Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania professor of anthropology Deborah A. Thomas will navigate the themes of her book Political Life in the Wake of the Plantation. This Sunday, the life and legacy of novelist Toni Morrison will be the main event.

14. Wonderspaces

When: Opened on Friday, January 24

Wonderspaces, the pop-up spellbinding and artistic installation, continues to captivate the city each day. The Fashion District Philadelphia will be the endeavor’s first permanent location. The exhibit Points of View will blow you away with its creative construct, VR components, and one-of-a-kind visuals.

15. Camp-In

Scouts in The Giant Heart

Where:  The Franklin Institute | 222 N. 20th St

When: Runs through Saturday, February 22

This fun and captivating museum event bring out tons of families every time. Camp-In at Penn Museum offers an engaging, fun, and informative sleepover at one of the best institutes in the city. There will be hands-on games, crafts, telescope observations, a volcano feature screening in the Tuttleman IMAX® Dome Theater, and more.

16. OWN IT Penn Women’s Empowerment Conference

OWN IT Penn will take place this Saturday. There will be a series of workshops, activities, panels, and opportunities to “motivate and connect young women everywhere”. This spectacular empowerment conference seeks to bridge the gap between leaders in industry and the aspiring young women who admire them.

17. Markets at Bok

For those looking for amazing collectibles and one-of-a-kind pieces for the house, your family, or workspace, these flea markets are for you. The Winter Fare and Liberty Flea both take place this Saturday. There will be tons of jewelry, home furnishings, candles, signature items, clothing, food, and more.

18. Rush vs Wings

Philly NLL action continues this weekend when the Wings take on the Saskatchewan Rush (5-2) this Saturday afternoon. The Wings (7-3) have only suffered one home loss this season. Come down to the Wells Fargo Center to get in on all of the action.

19. Party for the Market

When: Saturday, February 22 | 7:30 p.m.

This Saturday, one of the country’s oldest and most storied markets will be hosting their Party at the Market. There will be six live bands, four open bars, food from over 30 market vendors, dancing, and more at the historic Reading Terminal Market.

National Margarita Day is this Saturday, February 22. Several locations across the city will be celebrating the festive drinking holiday. Café Ynez, Distrito, Franky Bradley’s, Milkboy, and several other hotspots will have you covered during this memorable libation soiree.

21. World Cafe Live Beerfest

When: Saturday, February 22 | 1 p.m.

Speaking of celebrations, this Saturday at 1 pm, World Cafe Live will be hosting a spectacular beer festival.  There will be amazing incredible brews, games, live music, small plates, and so much more. This is a craft beer festival that you don’t want to miss.

22. Mardi Gras Weekend at Xfinity Live!

Where: XFINITY Live! | 1100 Pattison Ave

When: Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23

Xfinity Live will be hosting two Mardi Gras events this weekend. This Saturday night, starting at 9 pm, stop by the entertainment venue with your purple, yellow & green beads. There will be a live performance by Go Go Gadget, a bead contest, a King Cake Eating contest, a cash balloon drop, a shopping cart parade, hurricane Specials, mystery prizes, and more. This is a free-to-enter event with free parking after 8:30 pm. This Sunday, the 2020 Mummers Mardi Gras Festival marches into the city. There will be a Mummers string bands will perform live, food trucks, booze, and a photo booth. Xfinity Live! will be the place to be.

23. Jets vs. Flyers

When: Saturday, February 22 | 7 p.m.

The Philadelphia Flyers will be hosting the Winnipeg Jets this Saturday evening. The Flyers are currently 3rd in Metropolitan Division. They’ll continue their crusade for the playoffs in front of a roaring South Philly crowd.  Come to the Wells Fargo Center to see these two teams face off.

24. Eric Nam

Where: Union Transfer | 1026 Spring Garden St

When: Saturday, February 22 | 8 p.m.

K-pop star, actor, and GQ Magazine Korea‘s 2016 Man Of The Year”, Eric Nam will be taking over Union Transfer this Saturday night. The “Congratulations” and “Runaway” singer released his fourth studio album, Before We Begin, in November 2019.

25. Trippie Redd

Punch Line Philly Presents Ladies Night Out Comedy Tour this Saturday night. Hosted by  The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Nene Leakes, this comedy special will feature Loni Love, Adele Givens, Sherri Shepherd, Kym Whitley & B Simone.

28. Marie Cuttoli: The Modern Thread from Miró to Man Ray

29. Flyers Wives Carnival at the Wells Fargo Center

The 43rd Annual Flyers Wives Carnival takes place this Sunday. This carnival-style charity event will feature six-story-tall Ferris Wheel, autographs and photos with players, carnival games, and activities on and off the ice. Through the years, the carnival has raised more than $29 million to support a multitude of worthy non-profit organizations across the Greater Philadelphia Region.
