The PHLY Zone: Sixers draft talk, Doug the OC vs. Doug the HC, and Philly housing trends

On this week’s episode of The PHLY Zone, we talk talks Morey’s trades including Josh Richardson and Al Horford, what Seth Curry brings to the table, the Sixers’ draft, Doug Pederson being his own enemy, gentrification in the city, and the latest Philly news. The acquisition of Seth Curry is true salary cap help. In 2020-21, his number will be $7.8 million, then $8.1 million in 2021-22, and $8.5 million in 2022-23. He’s also 44% from beyond the arc which is second all-time in the NBA.

Danny Green will be a free agent after the season. The Sixers got off the final two years of Horford’s deal and saved over $50 million in the process.

With the 21st pick in the NBA Draft, the Sixers selected Tyrese Maxey out of Kentucky. In his one year in college, he averaged 14 pts, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. When Maxey faced top 10 competition, his PPG averages went up by 9 PPG, his FG percentage went up 10%, and his RPG went up 50%. He averaged 23 PPG on 53% shooting and 6 RPG vs. Top-10 squads.

The Sixers selected Isaiah Joe with the 49th overall pick and Paul Reed with the 58th overall pick.

Switching over to the Eagles, we examine the putrid state of the team. The Eagles are ranked 29th overall, 28th offense (30th passing and 15th running), 15th on defense (21st in the pass and 13th vs run), 19th in special teams.

The Eagles are currently averaging 4.92 yards per pass play. If that were to hold, it would be their worst average of the last 20 years and the third-worst average of the last 30 years. We go over who’s to blame and our outlook on the season.

An initiative will focus on neighborhoods surrounding Fishtown, East Kensington, Northern Liberties. The Philadelphia Housing Authority will team up with a group of non-profit organizations in eastern North Philadelphia to develop 240 lots for affordable housing. About 80% of the proposed parcels are vacant lots located between Second and Sixth streets and Cecil B. Moore and Lehigh avenues. The PHLY Zone looks into what it means to have to displace residents who built and were raised in a community.

Gentrification is a word that gets tossed around a lot, especially in Philadelphia but we examine what means to revitalize a community without erasure.
