Search Over. Here Are Your Apparent Finalists for the Eagles’ Head Coaching Job

We’ve covered the Eagles’ coaching search minute by minute, and now that the Eagles’ search for new candidates appears to be over, let’s list the candidates the Eagles have confirmed that they’ve interviewed, with only one thus far as being hired as a head coach. Can you say Super Bowl? Good, because then you’ll owe the NFL money that they so direly need.

Duce Staley

Not gonna happen.

Pat Shurmur

Not gonna happen… I think.

Adam Gase

Miami.

Doug Marrone

lol no.

Sean McDermott

OK, the Eagles didn’t interview him. He probably wasn’t in their Top 100, actually. It sounded like McDermott was very receptive to the idea of coaching the Eagles, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Tom Coughlin

A name that’s gaining more and more steam as we move on. Probably because it’s the biggest name on their list right now.

Doug Pederson

I don’t know. Seems like a favorite of Lurie’s and Roseman’s. Will bring Andy Reid’s offense back to Philadelphia basically. Not sure if we need that.

Paul Guenther

The Eagles reportedly requested to interview him, but the Eagles never confirmed that they did.

Ben McAdoo

Seems the fit to become the next Giants head coach, but if Coughlin comes to Philly, he could conceivably bring McAdoo in and transition the coaching job to him after a few years. Not sure McAdoo wouldn’t just want a head coaching job now, though, unless he feels like he’s not ready.

Jon Gruden

Nothing to see here.

Out of these candidates, I have three that I probably won’t bitch and complain about. Maybe.

  1. Tom Coughlin. Just because it’d be the most ballsy move Lurie and Roseman could make, and he would bring a fire to Philly like we haven’t seen in a while.
  2. Pat Shurmur. The players seem to really love him and he looked good, for a while, in the season finale against the Giants as the guy in charge. I wouldn’t put it past Lurie and co. giving him another chance to coach.
  3. Duce Staley. Give the guy a chance. And because I don’t want Doug Pederson. ProcessĀ of elimination.

Jon Gruden would be No. 1 on my list, but if the Eagles really aren’t all that interested in him, I guess I can’t really put him up there, can I? Oh, screw it. He’s my top candidate out of all of these guys. Kind of sad in a way.

Of course, Lurie and Roseman could surprise us and land someone out of nowhere like they did with Chip Kelly, or they can narrow it down to Doug Pederson and Duce Staley. But, for now, it looks like they’ll select from a list of guys they’ve already interviewed.

Do you want some Eaglespeak to make yourself feel better about these candidates? Just leave it to Dave Spadaro.
