Who’s Better: Innes or Missanelli? The Numbers Are In

The battle between Josh Innes and Mike Missanelli is a very well-documented one here in Philadelphia. There has been a ton of posturing back and forth, on-air battles, face-to-face confrontations, and debates on streaming and non-streaming numbers.

Well, now we have an answer as to who rules the afternoon sports drive in Philly. We bring you the numbers via Jason Barrett’s sports media blog, Barrett Sports Media.

“35 radio executives took part in the voting process. Each member was provided with 35 shows to choose from and asked to select their Top 20 in exact order. This was the criteria they used in making their choices:

  • Strong local ratings success in 2015
  • An established track record in the format
  • Quality content delivered on a consistent basis
  • Spent more than 2/3 of the year with the radio station
  • Finished 2015 employed at the station and without the show being changed
  • Points are to be given for each ranking (EX: 20 points for 1st place, 1 point for 20th place)

If a show didn’t spend the majority of the year on the air and make an impact in their local market, they didn’t make the final 35. In some cases, a show may have done both, but didn’t perform as high as the other 35 ahead of them. The objective is to recognize the best shows of 2015, not the longest tenured show or the ones we’d draft if all were free agents.

The 35 executives who voted represent 23 U.S cities and 15 different broadcast companies. I sought out smart and experienced industry people from a number of organizations across the country because I wanted the results to be balanced and without company bias or geographical influence affecting the totals.

There will be debate over some of the selections but I remind you that the goal is to highlight those in our business who produced strongly in 2015, and to give you an idea of how the top leaders in the sports talk format view the country’s best afternoon drive programs. I myself did not vote on the results, but will have a column coming out next week sharing my own observations and opinions on what I learned while overseeing this project.

I want to thank everyone who was a part of our executive committee and took the time to share their input. Now without further delay, Barrett Sports Media presents “America’s Top 20 Local Sports Afternoon Shows” as part of “The 2015 Best in Sports Radio Awards!”

I’m not surprised at all. Missanelli’s act has gone stale, every day it’s the same tired routine of top 3 this top 3 that or general knowledge Wednesday’s, where Missanelli forces the callers to answer a question, and people are tired of it.

  2. Chris

Innes now has handlers on his show. Mikey Miss thinks he’s smarter than everyone. The end result: Philadelphia sports radio in the afternoon is now overwhelmed by a megalomaniac and a wannabe shock jock

  3. Gene

Sports Talk Radio “jumped the shark” (the kids might need to look this term up:) many years ago and that’s why the “shock jock” syndrome continues. There is and will always be only one Howard Stern……..the rest are VERY poor imitators. I stopped listening years ago. It makes my ears bleed and the ratings decline in the category continues to drop!

  4. Troy

Innes can’t be a qualifier since his show changed in 2015. He had Tony Bruno on and then Bruno just up and left the clown show. This goes against the rule that “the show didn’t change”.

In my book they both stink, talk radio stinks. They claim to be a sports station but when people call to talk hockey they are berated and cut short. Use to follow, but not no more.
Cannot stand listening to men who think they are the best in the world…grow up idiots…get a real job. Sitting behind a mic for a few hours a day does not make any of them real men.

I’m just glad I don’t have to hear Jon & Sean mid-days. Talk radio wasn’t your strong suit skippy.

  7. RobFourForFour

Innes is un-listenable, he is like a bad Howard Stern broadcast from 1991…Missanelli’s act is a bit stale and he is a true know it all…but man, I would rather listen to him than that clown any day….He was such a creep, Tony Bruno ran away…

  8. Hipster kscott blows

Mike miss is boring. Innes is funny. Fake cuz was hilarious last Friday.

  9. Amanda Hugginkiss

Josh’s show doesn’t work because unlike when Stern did the same act, you couldn’t watch porn on your phone. Why do I want to hear underboob talk? When it was the 80s, I guess it was funny. Now, it’s an abortion.

Listening to Inness is like listening to just Steve from Preston and Steve. He says something mildly funny. But the gaggle of cohosts burst out laughing. And then he thinks it is hysterical to just keep repeating it over and over and over again. He also does the Steve thing of thinking that just mentioning anything from the 80’s in hysterical. At least Preston and Steve will play Rush every now and then.

  11. Jillian Mele gave me the clap

IDK why anyone listens to sports radio. I’m not sure what the appeal is, do people actually enjoy being talked down to like Missanelli does to his callers? In the past couple years i’ve rarely listened and feel better for it. The hosts are all know-nothings who think they are actually more important than the games and athletes they talk endlessly about.

Innes wants fame so bad but his act is theft he has moments that are funny then back to the act!! Mike miss is a snob but he takes lots of calls better show
