Will the Eagles Trade up in the Draft for Carson Wentz?

If the Cleveland Browns decide to trade for Colin Kaepernick or sign Robert Griffin III, it will alter the landscape of the 2016 NFL Draft quarterback class. Does that mean the Eagles might possibly trade up for North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz?

An NFL Executive seems to think so.

This is what he said on Lance Zierlein’s NFL.com story on Wednesday.

Don’t be surprised if a team like the Eagles make a really strong move up the board to get (Carson Wentz). I don’t think he’s worth it, but I think they do. Everyone thinks you have to move ahead of Cleveland, but (Browns Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta) will want to get as many picks as possible out of this draft. It wouldn’t surprise me if a team moved directly to Cleveland’s spot for Wentz.”

Interesting.

And trading up in the draft for Wentz is something I’d think long and hard about. I’m very high on him and think he’s the best of a very weak quarterback class.

While I’d shy away from wanting to make a swap with Cleveland at No. 2, maybe the Eagles can leapfrog the San Francisco 49ers at No. 7 and work out a deal with the Baltimore Ravens at No. 6 or even the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 5.

According to the NFL Draft trade chart, the eighth pick is worth 1,400 points, while the sixth is 1,600 and fifth is 1,700. The difference in 200 points if the Eagles want to swap selections with the Ravens would be the equivalent of a mid third-round pick, while the 300 for the Jaguars’ fifth would be like a low second rounder.

Philadelphia has a pair of thirds in the upper half of the round if Baltimore is interested.

The problem with potentially taking Wentz, whose Pro Day takes place Thursday morning, is Philadelphia has holes to fill on the offensive line, secondary and linebacker. All of a sudden the Eagles would have less ammunition to plug them.

The Sam Bradford haters would be all for landing Wentz, the supporters not so much.
