What’s happening in Philly this weekend: June 7-9

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Closing Soon: The Book of Mormon

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 9th

The Book of Mormon will be ending its run at the Academy of Music this Sunday. The nine-time Tony award-winning production tells the tale of two missionaries’ conversion travels to Uganda. This zany and hilarious musical  “restores your faith in musicals” according to  The Washington Post.

2. Closing Soon: Mythic Creatures Dragons, Unicorns, & Mermaids 

Where: The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 9th

The Academy of Natural Sciences’ wonderful exhibit Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids will be closing this Sunday. Come explore the tall tales of griffins, giants, and unicorns. It’s your last chance to learn why so many legendary water spirits look like mermaids. Touch fossils, explore winged mythological creatures, build your own dragon and come face to face with a giant legendary sea monster.

3. Closing Soon: Welcome the Stranger at the National Liberty Museum

Where: National Liberty Museum, 321 Chestnut St.
When: Runs through Saturday, June 8th

Welcome the Stranger closes at the National Liberty Museum this weekend. This phenomenal display is a wonderous “one-woman exhibit of cast glass, ceramics, and mixed media” by Micaela Amateau AmatoDon’t miss your last opportunity to see these tremendous works.

4. Closing Soon: Philly Beer Week

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, June 9th

The 12th annual Philly Beer Week runs through Sunday, June 9th. The exciting brewing week has put several local breweries front and center over the past week. Throughout the weekend check out the many sampling events, parties, and crawls all over the city.

5. Philly Pride Month and PrideDay LGBT Parade and Festival

When: Pride Month through the June; Pride Parade: Sunday, June 9th

This weekend, Philly Pride will be taking over the city beginning with a kickoff party on 12th and Locust streets on Friday. The LGBT heralding festival’s celebrations will be popping up in various neighborhoods. The next few days will be full of mixers, parties, panel discussions, film screenings, and many more events. On Saturday, Cherry Street Pier asks you to write messages on rainbow ribbons that will then be tied to a special Pride Parade float. The Float will be a part of the NYC Pride Parade. This Sunday, the marquee weekend will close with an amazing Pride Parade ending at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing.

6. Phillies Weekend 

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Friday, June 7th-Sunday, June 9th

Andrew McCutchen’s devastating injury won’t stop the Phillies from surging through the season. This weekend the home team will be taking on the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series. The National League showdown will have all the action. Attendees at the Phillies game on Saturday will be able to hear The Avett Brothers perform live on the field right after the game.

7. Mural Arts Tours 

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, June 7th-Sunday, June 9th

Mural Arts will be having immersing tours this weekend of the various murals in the city. This Friday there will be a Masterpieces West Mural Tour. The Saturday highlight will be an Immigrating South Mural Tour. Come explore the diversity of South Philadelphia’s immigrant communities through time. There will be new murals on display including Migrating Home by Shira Walinsky and Parts Per Million by Ben Volta. There are several other vibrant walking tours on Saturday and Sunday as well.

8. Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show

Where: Rittenhouse Square, 210 W. Rittenhouse Sq.
When: Friday, June 7th-Sunday, June 9th

This will mark the 91st year of the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show.  This weekend there will be140 artists on display highlighting several mediums of art. There will be global creatives selling their painting, sculptures, sketches, drawings, and several other pieces.

9. Friday Night at the Museum

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, June 7th, 5PM-8:45PM

Each Friday evening the Philadelphia Museum of Art starts your weekend off right with this amazing art and music collective event. This Friday night “improvisational bluegrass, folk, funk, vintage pop, and the genre-bending quartet” Twisted Pine will be taking over the Great Stair Hall.

10. Old City First Fridays

When: Friday, June 7th

The first Friday of the month always gets Old City Districts shops, institutions, galleries, restaurants, and art lovers bustling. Several art studios in the area such as the Painted Bride Art Center, The Clay Studio, and 3rd Street Gallery have several beautiful exhibits and workshops open for all. There will be a free movie screening at The Betsy Ross House, activities on Columbus Blvd., and more.

11. Frankford Ave First Fridays

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, June 7th

Fishtown will be surging with art, culture, food, bar festivities and more. June’s First Friday! will feature special sour hour at Johnny Brenda’s, photography sessions, floral pop-ups, art sales, poetry readings, dance parties, and more.

12. Comedy Juice 

Comedy Juice

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th

If you’re looking for laughs this weekend, come to Punch Line Philly. This Friday and Saturday, Comedy Juice will be held at the entertainment venue. Comedy Juice has been the number one show in both New York and Los Angeles for over a decade. Stand-up comedian and actress Zainab Johnson will also be performing a two-night set at the laugh house this weekend.

13. New Found Glory

When: Friday, June 7th, 8PM

Florida alternative rock band New Found Glory will be rocking the house at Franklin Music Hall this Friday night. The recently released a covers album From the Screen to Your Stereo 3. These Warped Tour favorites will be a great stop for rock fans this weekend.

14. Farmers’ Markets

When: Saturday, June 8th

Each weekend in the City, several areas in the city are filled with produce and handmade crafts. Head over to Clark Park Farmers’ MarketHeadhouse District Farmers’ MarketRittenhouse Square Farmers’ MarketMarket at the Fareway in Chestnut Hill, or Fairmount Farmers Market for all your needs. For those in collegiate domains, there’s a weekly University City Farmers’ Market and Cecil B. Moore Farmers’ Market.

15. Philadelphia VegFest

When: Saturday, June 8th, 11AM-4PM

This Saturday, come to Bainbridge Green for the 2018 Philadelphia VegFest. There will be cooking workshops, discussions, live music, food vendors, and more at this plant-based life celebration. Sponsored by MOMs Organic Market, this community and family-friendly event offers up many exciting insights about how to live meat-free.

16. West Philly Festivals

This Saturday, West Philadelphia will be bursting with exciting events and great artistic experiences. The West Park Arts Fest will feature live dance performances, arts and crafts, pony rides, comic book corners, and a live music festival. The West Philly Porch Fest is also this Saturday. The one-of-a-kind musical showcase includes free shows on porches all over the neighborhood.

17. Street Dept’s Second Saturday Tours 

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, June 8th

Streets Dept’s 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours will be taking you through Queen Village/South Philly this weekend. Every second Saturday Conrad Benner will be hosting a walking tour of Philadelphia’s most stunning street art, murals, and graffiti. This will be an immersive and informative tour full of colorful designs and great conversation.

18. National Rosé Day 

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, June 8th

National Rosé Day is this Saturday. There are several venues across the city where Oenophiles and other libation lovers can go to celebrate the day.  Assembly Rooftop Lounge is offering a frozen treat for Rosé Day with a Frosé ( rosé, Cocchi Rosa, dry vermouth, strawberry, lemon, and topped with fresh blueberries)There will be an Andayday Rosé Fest at Uptown Beer Garden and several other deals and parties to attend.

19. Fishtown FestivAle

Where:  Frankford Ave. between Girard Ave. and Oxford Ave.
When: Saturday, June 8th, 12PM-8PM

This Saturday afternoon and evening the Frankford Hall, Johnny Brenda’s, and plenty other Fishtown hotspots will be serving up food and drinks. This massive block party features multiple music stages, local art, fireworks, carnival games, a flea market area, and 70 plus vendors. There will be a festival after-party in the Outdoor Beer Garden at The Fillmore from 7:00 p.m. until midnight. SugarHouse Casino, the event sponsor, will also be offering free parking.

20. The Philadelphia Orchestra 

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, June 8th, 8PM

The Philadelphia Orchestra will be highlighting the Russian Masters through this Saturday night. Igor Stravinsky’s Funeral Song,  Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1, and Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto will be filling the walls of Verizon Hall. Pianist Beatrice Rana, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and the entire orchestra will have you enthralled by the wonder of these great composers.

21. New York Red Bulls  Vs. Union

When: Saturday, June 9th, 7:30PM

The first place Philadelphia Union will be taking on the New York Red Bulls this Saturday night.  Talen Energy Stadium this Friday will be rocking with some of the best play in MLS. Come out to this massive outdoor arena to see this high energy and thrilling live sporting event.

22. Flag Fest at Betsy Ross House

When: Sunday, June 9th- Saturday, June 15th

Flag Fest 2019 kicks off on Sunday with a free and fun celebration. The Betsy Ross House will be brimming with several activities all week. There will be free concerts, a pop-up beer garden, historical impersonators,  a flag donut from Federal Donuts,  and more.

23. Black Restaurant Week

When: Sunday, June 9th-Sunday, June 23rd

The first annual Philadelphia Black Restaurant Week runs through Sunday, June 17th. Go to several African-American, African, and Caribbean participating restaurants for amazing and enhanced menus. There will be cocktail competitions, cook-offs, and more throughout the week.  Some local establishments include Haute Lounge, Rose Petals Cafe and Lounge, Tasties, and others.

24. Odunde Festival

Where: South 23rd St. and South St.
When: Sunday, June 9th, 10AM– 8PM

This Sunday the Odunde Festival returns to the City of Brotherly Love. This spanning cultural gathering will have live music, dance performances, speakers, crafts, and more at this exciting event celebrating the African diaspora.

25. Patti LuPone 

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Sunday, June 9th, 3PM

Broadway icon Patti LuPone will be bringing her one-woman concert “Don’t Monkey with Broadway” to the Kimmel Center this Sunday afternoon. The two-time Tony Award will be performing classic show tunes, dives into her interactions with other stage legends, and speaks about her journey to stardom.

26. Philly’s Phunniest 

Where: Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Sansom St.
When: Sunday, June 9th, 7PM & 9PM

The 2019 Philly’s Phunniest preliminary rounds continue to roll along this Sunday. More than 200 aspiring comics will throw their hats in the ring to compete for the title of Philly’s Phunniest Person and a grand prize of $1,200. Be sure to check out all the action at this yearly and highly-anticipated competition.
