Carter Hart backstops Flyers to second-straight win over Devils

The Philadelphia Flyers saw Carter Hart return between the posts on Thursday and the third-year goalkeeper did not disappoint in helping the Orange and Black earn a second-straight win this week.

Hart made 33 saves as Alain Vigneault’s team downed the host New Jersey Devils 3-1 in Newark. It was the Flyers’ fifth win this season and a strong bounce back in Northern New Jersey after sloppy performances against the Bruins last weekend.

Michael Raffl scored the game-winning goal for the Flyers while Claude Giroux added an insurance goal in the third period. Raffl’s goal came 2:10 into the final period, after his snapshot beat Scott Wedgewood and put the Flyers in front.

Both teams were level after 20 minutes of hockey, with the Flyers hitting back to tie things up. Damon Severson’s opener put Lindy Ruff’s team ahead on home ice, but the Flyers would come back swinging with an unfamiliar face tying things up.

Nate Prosser’s first goal for the team proved to be crucial as it tied the score at 1-1 close to midway through the first period. Erik Gustafsson and Kevin Hayes were credited with the assists on Prosser’s tip-in finish.

Raffl’s second goal of the season swung the momentum into Philadelphia’s favor before Giroux registered his first goal of the new season. Gustafsson registered his second assist of the night while Jakub Voracek also added his eighth helper of the campaign.

Despite being heavily outshot, 34-17, a trend which has been seen on several occasions through nine games, the Orange and Black left the Prudential Center with another two points in their back pocket.

The Flyers return to the Wells Fargo Center this weekend for Saturday and Sunday match-ups with the New York Islanders.
