Flyers add forward Zack MacEwen, move Kevin Hayes to IR

The Philadelphia Flyers made a roster addition on Wednesday, two days before the team begins the 2021 NHL season.

Forward Zack MacEwen was claimed off waivers by the Flyers from the Vancouver Canucks and also added center Kevin Hayes to Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), according to President of Hockey Operations & General Manager, Chuck Fletcher. The 25-year-old MacEwen has spent the last four years in the Canucks organization and will add depth to the Flyers offensive corps.

Last season, MacEwen posted two points in 34 games for Vancouver and overall has a total of nine points in 55 career regular season games, all with the Canucks. He also appeared in six Stanley Cup playoff games with Vancouver in the 2020 postseason bubble in Edmonton.

The 6-3, 205-pound forward played three seasons for Vancouver’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Utica Comets, from 2017-18 to 2019-20 where he recorded 96 points (37 goals, 59 assists) in 155 regular season games.

A native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, MacEwen spent three seasons of junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Moncton Wildcats (2014-15 to 2015-16) and Gatineau Olympiques (2016-17).

The Flyers open the regular season at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday against the Vancouver Canucks.
