What’s happening in Philly this weekend: April 6-8

Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Closing this Week: Chuck Close at PAFA

Where: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 118 N. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, April 8th

The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) has been showcasing contemporary artist and photographer Chuck Close for months. The world-renowned photographer’s work, including 90 photographs, align this great institution’s hall in a special exhibit. Come see this hypnotizing work before it’s too late.

2. Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, April 8th

The second annual Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival begins today and runs through this Sunday. The festival invokes the medium of film to propel the narrative for the wellness of the globe. There will be several movie screenings, discussions, panels, Q&As, and more.

3. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr. 

Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Saturday, April 14th

The Walnut Street Theatre is bringing this wonderful Children’s spectacular to life. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr tells the story of Stanley Lambchop’s desire to lead a lively life full of adventure. One day he becomes flat and a wonderful world opens up to him Bring your entire family out for this great production.

4. Philadelphia Orchestra

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Saturday, April 7th

The Philadelphia Orchestra has a collection of some of the most talented musicians around. This week the brilliant assembly will be holding a Philadelphia Voices series. Tod Machover will be joining the orchestra to premiere this great and tech-infused piece.  The music will be merged with sounds and voices of  Philadelphians bustling through the busy streets of the city.

5. Old City First Friday

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, April 6th

Every first Friday of the month the Old City District comes alive. Several galleries and art houses in the area hosts special gatherings and workshops. This week come out to the 3rd Street Gallery to see Primal Splits by Conny Parsons or the Painted Bride Art Center for any of their demonstrations. These events are truly an artistic treasure.

6. Grace and Grandeur

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, April 8th

The Pennsylvania Ballet will be lighting up the Merriam Theater stage this weekend with their triumphant of Grace and Grandeur. This mix of three different ballets is a stunning display of great artistry, choreography, and performers. Come out to this well-known theater to be marveled.

7. Extension or Communication: Puerto Rico

Where: Taller Puertorriqueno, 2600 N. 5th St.
When: Opens Friday, April 6th

Taller Puertorriqueno will be hosting an opening reception for Extension or Communication: Puerto Rico tonight from 5:30p.m.-8 p.m. The exhibit will be a feature series at the cultural complex through Saturday, May 5th. The project highlights the “emancipatory projects that have emerged in Puerto Rico and Philadelphia in the aftermath of hurricane Maria”.

8. Daymé Arocena

Where: Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St.
When: Friday, April 6th, 7:30PM & 9PM

Afro-Cuban singer Daymé Arocena will be performing at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts tonight. The soulful performer is known for her powerhouse vocals and superior jazzy range. This amazing songstress will be doing two raw performances tonight. Don’t miss out on this great singer.

9. Havana Nights

Where: World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.
When: Friday, April 6th, 8PM

Staying in the same musical vein as Arocena, World Cafe Live will be hosting Havana Nights tonight. This is a free event full of Latin flair and music. There will be authentic food and drinks available for purchase. Come out for the amazing salsa music and tear up the dance floor.

10. First Friday

Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, April 6th, 6PM-9PM

The Barnes Foundation’s First Friday soiree is tonight. The series of jamborees always has great live music, cocktails, gallery access, and more. Tonight the Philadelphia-based Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble will be pulling out all the stops with a Crescent City Groove.

11. Drake Night at The Fillmore and Hip Hop Night at Coda

Where: Fillmore Philadelphia, 29 E. Allen St. and Coda, 1712 Walnut St.
When: Friday, April 6th, 9PM and Saturday, April 7th, 11PM

The Fillmore Philadelphia will be having Drake Night or So Far Gone Night tonight. The music venue’s speakers will be blaring with the latest hip-hop hits and sounds of the Toronto legend. The next night come out to Coda to take part in Hip-Hop Night.

12. James Bay

Where: Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St.
When: Friday, April 6th, 8PM

Three-time Grammy nominee and 2016 Brit Award winner James Bay will be playing at the Theatre of Living Arts tonight. The “Hold Back the River” singer will be releasing his second studio album in May. Come hear new tracks from the UK hitmaker and previous singles that made him a sizzling household name.

13. 76ers Weekend 

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 South Broad St.
When: Friday, April 6, 7PM and Sunday, April 8th, 1PM

The Philadelphia 76ers will be taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center.  They surging 76ers will also be hosting the Dallas Mavericks this Sunday as well. Bring your energy and fiery spirit out to the WFC to cheer on the young squad.

14. TEDxPenn

Where: Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St.
When: Saturday, April 7th

The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania will be hosting a plethora and wellspring of information and advancement this Saturday. TEDxPenn will have tremendous speakers and innovators sparking great conversation throughout the entire day.

15. Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, April 7th-Sunday, April 15th

The 2018 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia is this Saturday. There will be a tea ceremony, plenty of karate demonstrations, calligraphy expos, music, dancers, and several other cultural displays. Please come to this tremendous celebration of tradition.

16. Flyers vs. Rangers

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, April 7th, 3PM

Come back to the Wells Fargo Center this Saturday afternoon to watch the Philadelphia Flyers vs. the New York Rangers. This will be the last game of the season for the local hockey club. They will not be making it to the playoffs this year so come out and cheer them on for the last time.

17. Union vs. Earthquakes

Where: Talen Energy Stadium, 1 Stadium Dr. Chester, PA
When:  Saturday, April 7th, 7PM

Speaking of sporting events, the Philadelphia Union will be back at home this weekend taking on the San Jose Earthquakes. This Saturday Talen Energy Stadium will be rocking. The 3-1 club will need all your cheers and screams this weekend.

18. Jerry Seinfeld

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, April 7th, 7:30PM & 9PM

Comedian, actor, writer, and producer Jerry Seinfeld will be front and center at the Academy of Music. He will be doing his stand up routine in front of packed crowd of fans. He will be bringing his brand of social and everyday commentary to the city of Philadelphia.

19. Anderson East

Where: Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St.
When: Saturday, April 7th, 9PM

Alabama R&B and Americana act Anderson East will be playing at the Theatre of Living Arts this Saturday night. East released his third studio album, Encore this January. Come hear the “Satisfy Me” singer at this great entertainment venue.

20. Uncorked

Where: Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Sansom St.
When: Sunday, April 8th, 5:30PM

The Helium Comedy Club is offering a full-service experience this Sunday. There will be cocktails, dinner, and laughs all pouring out of this comedy house. The event begins with a one-of-a-kind wine tasting, then the guests will have access to a tasty meal while they enjoy a great stand up performance. This will be a great way to close out your weekend.
