What’s Happening in Philly This Weekend: Mar. 17-19

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and culture places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through Weekend

1. Raiders of  the Lost Ark


Where: Kimmel Center, 300 s. Broad St.
When: Friday, March 17th-Sunday, March 19th

The Philadelphia Orchestra will be performing the legendary score of the feature film Raiders of the Lost Ark. The John Williams’ musical accompaniment takes the movie to all new emotional heights and exhilarating levels. Guests will be able to take in the mesmerizing film and be swept away by the music of one of the best orchestra’s in the world.

2. Jurassic World Exhibit


Where: The Franklin Institute, 222 N. 20th St.
When: Runs through Sunday, April 23rd, various times

This massive exploratory exhibit is something out of this world. Dive back into the land of dinosaurs and wonder at this thrilling face-to-face spectacle. Based off the successful film franchise, this experience lets you see pre-historic creatures, has guided tablet or mobile tours, and has interactive displays. Made in collaboration with paleontologist Jack Horner, this exhibit has something for all-ages.

3. Urban Philly Professionals Happy Hour


Where: Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 S. 36th St.
When: Friday, March 17th, 6PM-9PM

Teaming up with the Philadelphia do-it-all site Visit Philly, the Ubran Philly Professional Network (UPPN) will begin their series of several pop up happy hours this Friday. The spring rotation of this unique post-work intermix will include several museums in the city. This Friday’s stop will include fun people, drinks, and will be a fun way to network.

4. Fabolous and Jadakiss


Where: The Fillmore Philadelphia, 29 E. Allen St.
When: Friday, March 17th, 8PM

Rap heavy-hitters Fabolous and Jadakiss, have been hinting at their collaborative work Freddy Vs. Jason since last year. In February, the duo released the lead single from the album “Rapture” and a trailer for the complete studio release. This Friday, the New York natives will take The Fillmore stage together to not only promote their upcoming release but to grace the crowd with some of their past hits.

5. Lil Duval


Where: Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Samson St.
When: Friday, March 17th and Saturday, March 18th at 7:30PM & 10PM, Sunday, March 19th, 7:30PM

Stand-up act Lil Duval began to expand his comedic spotlight in 2005 with his appearance on BET’s comedy series Coming to the Stage. Since then he has made several television appearances on MTV2 shows Guy Code and Hip Hop Squares, Comic View, and more. This weekend he will bring his raw jokes and creativity to the Helium Club.

6. 76ers Weekend 


Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, March 17th, 7PM & Sunday, March 19th, 1PM

After a hard-fought battle with the golden State Warriors the Philadelphia 76ers return home to take on Nerlens Noel and the Dallas Mavericks. This game marks a two-day home stay. The Sixers will also take on the Boston Celtics at the Wells Fargo Center this Sunday afternoon. Come out and cheer on this emerging and young team.

7. Saint Patrick’s Day at Xfinity Live!


Where: XFINITY Live! 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Friday, March 17th, 9PM

Entertainment venue XFINITY Live! will be hosting this St. Patrick’s Day extravaganza and blowout. There will be live performances by Bangarang in the Victory Beer Hall and more. Parking is free after 8 p.m. There will be drink specials for green beer, Irish Car Bobs, and Jameson. There will also be a Pot o’ Gold prize machine and a cash balloon drop at midnight.

8.Wanna Get Lucky Party at Coda


Where: CODA, 1712 Walnut St.
When: Friday, March 17th, 11PM

CODA will be ringing in St. Patrick’s Day with a party of their own. House DJ Magician will be spinning the latest hits, there will be a great lineup of specialty drinks, and so much more. Paddy’s Irish Whiskey and Ryan’s Irish Cream will be the drinks of the night. Entry is $15 for this event that will be blazing up the dance floor until the morning.

9. Coors Light Virtual Reality Tour


Where: New Deck Tavern, 3408 Samson St.
When: Saturday, March 18th, 2PM-4PM

This Coors Light tour series will include some of the best bars in the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and local Delaware areas. These exciting parties will have drink specials, prize giveaways, games, and an interactive virtual reality experience. Each participating location will have a VR machine connecting you to the icy slopes of the Rockies. You may even go home with a snowboard or two.

10 March Madness Stops


Where: City Tap House, 3925 Walnut St and Tavern on Broad, 200 s. Broad St.
When: Saturday, March 18th various times

Tavern on Broad will be hosting a “We’re All Mad Here” March Madness and St Patty’s bar crawl this Saturday. The crawl will be from noon to 8 p.m. There will be several drink specials at each location. A portion of the sales will go towards cancer research. City Tap House will have $5 Victory pints and several other food and drink specials. These are two entertaining venues to watch the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

11. 7th Annual Newtown Irish Festival


Where: Green Parrot Restaurant Pub & Patio, 240 N. Sycamore St. Newton, PA
When: Ends Sunday, March 19th , 6PM-10PM

The 7th Annual Newtown Irish Festival swarms Bucks County this weekend. This family-friendly  four-day event will have several activities. There will be live music, authentic Irish cuisine and beverages, Irish step-dancing, fact paining, balloons, and so much more. You can also enter the Shamrock Shuffle 5K race.

12. The Importance of Being Earnest Opening Weekend


Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St.
When: Run through Sunday, April 30th

Oscar Wilde’s celebrated and most popular play The Importance of Being Earnest will making its spring 2017 debut at the Walnut Street Theatre this week. This humorous and romantic work about mistaken identity has bizarre plot twists at every turn. Come see this exhilarating work and great performers at one of the best theaters in the city.

13. 2017 Philadelphia UNCF Mayor’s Masked Ball


Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St.

When: Saturday, March 18th, 7PM-11PM

The UNCF Masked Ball will be one of the highlights of Philadelphia’s weekend. This premiere and newsworthy fundraising event is one that shouldn’t be missed. There will be a silent auction, a masked award reception, dancing and live music, a formal dinner, and other activities. This is a gala that raises funds for social awareness and aids in the financial investment of children’s futures.

14. Borgore w/12th Planet


Where: Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St.
When: Saturday, March 18th, 8:30 PM

Israeli producer Asaf Borger, better known as Borgore, bring his metal infused EDM music to the Electric Factory this Saturday. Borgore’s brand of music is a marriage between dubstep and gothic rock. Many of his fans refer to it as “gorestep”. 12th Planet will also be there after being crowned the “Los Angeles dubstep God” by Rolling Stone Magazine recently. These two acts are offering upa unique musical flavor to energize your Saturday night.

15. Grits and Biscuits


Where: The Fillmore Philadelphia, 29 E. Allen St.
When: Saturday, March 18th, 9PM-2AM

This traveling entertainment and party event brings the dirty south to Philadelphia this Saturday. The Philadelphia Fillmore floors will be set ablaze with the best in southern hip hop and more. Bring your best outfit and friends to this all-night party that will have the DJs dropping all hits. Swag Surfin’ is not an option.

16. Philly Wine Week


Where: Multiple locations and participants
When: Sunday, March 19th-Sunday, March 26th

This is the fourth year of the wine-centric and tasting week. Over 50 venues and participating eateries in the city will be opening up their locations to host specialized dinners, pairing classes, and more. This Sunday there will be an “Opening Corks” celebration at the Academy of Natural Sciences. The event will have over 100 premium wines, food, giveaway tasting glasses, and raffles.

17. PAFA Free


Where: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 118 N. Broad St.
When: Sunday, March 19th, 11AM-5PM

Thanks to PECO and the Exelon Foundation, every Sunday during the World War I and American Art exhibition is free. The esteemed art academy and institution provides a launching point for several creative individuals to groom their talents and display their work. Don’t miss out on the chance to see their art and the wonderful exhibits showcased at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

18. Flyers vs Hurricanes


Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Sunday, March 19th, 7:30PM

Sunday night hockey is on the menu this weekend. The Philadelphia Flyers take on the Carolina Hurricanes. The first game after the All-Star break was against the Hurricanes in January. The Flyers were disastrously defeated in a 5-1 matchup. The Flyers will continue their uphill battle to seize a playoff spot under the leadership of Wayne Simmonds and rookie defenseman Ivan Provorov.
