Eagles linebacker Myke Tavarres made waves locally today by telling ESPN he would not stand for the national anthem during Thursday’s preseason finale against the Jets.
He then reversed course, at the behest of his alma mater and his agent – and will reportedly stand for the national anthem. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson released a statement moments ago with regards to the topic at hand.
“We respect the national anthem, its history and our many freedoms as Americans that it celebrates. We also respect an individual’s freedom of expression.”
Why is Pederson releasing a statement? Because Tavarres, along with Jordan Matthews, agreed with Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit down during the national anthem of his preseason game on Friday. It’s been a hot debate topic today. And somebody was going to ask him about it eventually.
