Sum of All Sports Report: Do Bye Weeks Matter in Fantasy Football?

Do you follow a direct path of bye week preparation when getting ready to employ your draft strategy? Do you focus on specific bye weeks during the heart of your Fantasy Football draft? I personally do not, but some treat them like the Holy Grail. Are they wrong?

From vast experience, I usually try and focus on a ZERO Bye Week strategy. This is where I never focus on the numbers until after the draft. Some say they focus on backups not having the same bye weeks as their starters, but having it all pan out is nearly impossible. What if you focus too much on these weeks and wind up missing out on a special player at a key position? I, for one, am not willing to take that chance.

If I were to play devil’s advocate, some would want to know if I was concerned about having all my main starters on their bye on the same week. To that I say this: it’s only one week and there’s always a way to fill in the blanks. On the positive side, there’s no more concern needed. Now you can focus on the rest of your season. In my opinion, there is little advantage gained by drafting with bye week consideration. I say draft at will and take the best player on the board! Any questions?

Dive further into this issue with Fantasy Sports Analyst and Real Sports Writer Tony Cutillo as he welcomes all comments and opinions. He uses his expertise to elaborate on all the top stories of the week while using his perspective to gauge interest. Here are his other sticking points he has up for interpretation this week:

 • Fantasy Football. Rookie running backs continue to go early. The running back position in Fantasy last season rewrote itself and rose from the dead. While all the wide receivers were grabbing headlines, running backs were just waiting to make their move. This year names like Christian McCaffrey, Joe Mixon, Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt, Leonard Fournette and Jonathan Williams are being sought out. Are you willing to reach? Who is your top rookie? I am going with McCaffrey. He plays on a good team with a guy named Superman. Any questions?

• NFL. Preseason injuries continue. We are just wrapping up the third week of the preseason and the dreaded injuries continue to mount. Key players such as Cameron Meredith (Bears) and Julian Edelman (Patriots) have been ruled out with ACL tears. Spencer Ware (Chiefs) is also facing season-ending surgery as well. As it has in recent years, injuries before the season are becoming more and more a concern. Some people say preseason games are the issue, but I beg to differ. Injuries can happen at any time and place. Limiting preseason snaps can hurt the comradery of a team and the speed of the game. Let it go!

Fantasy Baseball. Giancarlo Stanton isn’t done. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge gave us both a show in the Home Run Derby, but only one is continuing the surge. While Judge looks to find his special stroke again, Stanton is re-threading baseballs on their way out of Miami. As the trade speculation grew louder, his power went into overdrive. He just became the quickest MLB player to hit 50 HRs in a season since Barry Bonds did it in 2001. Is 60 a reality?

• NBA. Who won the Kyrie deal [if it still happens]? We all are hearing the news that Cleveland may indeed ask for more compensation based on the status of Isaiah Thomas’ hip, but looking at the face of the trade as it stands, who won? I still think it was a win-win for both teams based on the unique situation they both face. In Boston, they were unwilling to pay a max deal to a player they thought wouldn’t hold up healthy, while Cleveland sits on a notion that Irving doesn’t want to play there anymore and their King could be gone in a year.  It was a deal that had to be made.
