What’s happening in Philly this weekend: Aug. 9-11

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Waterfront Fun!

Where: Various locations
When: Various times

The Delaware Waterfront is a great location to enjoy the shimmering summer rays and take in some best views of the city. You can stop by Spruce Street Harbor Park or the Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest. Each Saturday there is an open-air market at Cherry Street Pier. R&B singer Vivian Green will be performing this Friday night for the Smooth Jazz Summer Nights series. There will also be live music this Sunday and family-friendly activities.

2. Creed II

Where: Dilworth Park | 1 S 15th St.
When: Friday, August 9 | 8:30 p.m.

Catch the smash hit and Philly-themed production Creed II this Friday at Dilworth Park.  TD Bank will be giving away free popcorn to each guest while supplies last. The Dilworth Park Café will have cocktails, beer, wine, and more. The  Philadelphia Film Society will have movie trivia before the feature film. This is a free BYO blanket event.

3. Hook

When: Friday, August 9 | 9 p.m.

Head over to The Oval this Friday night for a screening of Hook starring Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, and many others. You’ll be able to watch the childhood favorite for free right on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

4. Tommy and Me at FringeArts

Where: FringeArts | 140 N. Christopher Columbus Blvd
When: Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 25

Tommy and Me by Pro Football Hall of Fame sportswriter Ray Didinger will be beginning its run this weekend. Presented by Theatre Exile, the autobiographical production recounts a seminal time in Didinger’s life as he helps his life-long hero Tommy McDonald reach his goal of getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

5. Cirque Du Soleil Presents AMALUNA

Where: Greater Philadelphia Expo Center | 100 Station Avenue, Oaks
When: runs through Sunday, August 25

Last week we told you AMALUNA ended its run in the region. Well, we have amazing news for you! The stellar and captivating show will be running through Sunday, August 25. Don’t miss your opportunity to see soaring performers, breathtaking athleticism, one-of-a-kind-visuals, and more.

6. I HeART Summer Promotion Continues 

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art | 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy and the Barnes Foundation | 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Promo runs through Saturday, September 21 | Tickets can be used through Monday, September 30

The Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have teamed up for a special I HeART Summer promotion. Visitors save $10 when purchasing I HeART Summer combo tickets through September 21. The combo ticket is priced at $35 which is a 20% discounted admission to both museums. Tickets can be purchased at philamuseum.org or visitors can mention “I HeART Summer” on-site or over the phone at the Barnes or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

7. Philly Asian Histories

Where: Asian Arts Initiative | 1219 Vine St
When: Runs through Saturday, August 10

The Asian Arts Initiative will be hosting Philly Asian Histories this weekend. Using real stories collected from API community members, this collection of great performers will be highlighting different moments in Philly Asian history. There will be music, visual arts, poetry, choreography, and more.

8. The Ghostly Circus: Tides of the Climates

Where: Laurel Hill Cemetery | 3822 Ridge Ave
When: Runs through Saturday, August 10

The grounds of the historic Laurel Hill Cemetery will be transformed into a unique circus for the sixth year in a row. The thrilling and eerily illuminating spectacle will feature acrobatics, ariel displays, sire-specific fires, and more.

9. Silent Philly at The Oval

Where: The Oval | 2451 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Friday, August 9 | 8 p.m.

Along with the movie screening mentioned above, The Oval will also be hosting a fun dance party this Friday night. Partygoers will be coming out to slide on those colorful headphones and dance the night away listening to their favorite music. The party is completely free!

10. D.L. Hughley

Where: Helium Comedy Club | 2031 Sansom St
When: Run through Sunday, August 11

One of The Original Kings of Comedy, radio host, political commentator, and actor will be coming to the City of Brotherly Love this weekend. He’ll hit all the controversial topics, hot-button issues, and bring his signature brand of comedy.  Bring your friends and family out for some gut-busting laughs.

11. Bug Fest at The Academy of Natural Sciences

Where: The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University | 1900 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Run through Sunday, August 11

This weekend is Bug Fest at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The institution will be crawling and fluttering with various insects. The annual festival of live insects, roach races, bug-tastings, goo-making, bed-bug-sniffing dogs, and Academy experts to explain the secret life of bugs will blow you away. Look for an amazing variety of millipedes, centipedes, scorpions, stick insects, caterpillars, tarantulas, beetles, ants, butterflies, and, of course, spiders.

12. Family Fun Day at the AAMP

Where: The African American Museum in Philadelphia | 701 Arch St.
When: Saturday, August 10 | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This Saturday, bring all your loved ones out to the African American Museum for Macy’s Family Fun Day. There will be a Summer Fun Day celebration. The event will have performances and plenty of family-friendly activities. The first 250 people in attendance will receive free entry.

13. Northern Liberties Second Saturday

Since its the second Saturday of the month, Northern Liberties 2nd Saturdays events are back this weekend. Several shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, and spaces will be opening up their business for deals. People will be crowding the sidewalks to visit the vibrant part of the city.

14. 2nd Saturday Germantown

Where: Cliveden | 6401 Germantown Ave.
When: Saturday, August 10 | 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Historic Germantown provides an engaging event every second Saturday of each month. There will be pay-what-you-wish events at all 18 sites. Extended hours, refreshments, immersive archive displays, and more. Come to this treasured and memorable area of the city and be swept away by history.

15. Port Richmond Blues Festival

Where: Tioga & Richmond Sts
When: Saturday, August 10 | 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Port Richmond Blues Festival is this Saturday. Come out for “Booze, Blues, and BBQ on Tioga Street”. There will be food eating contests, vendors, and more. King Groove, Mikey Junior, Russ Lambert, and Blue Bizness will be performing.

16. Fireworks & Fountains at Longwood Gardens

Where: Longwood Gardens | 1001 Longwood Road | Kennett Square, PA
When: Saturday, August 10 | 9:15 p.m.

Each season Longwood Gardens pulls off their dazzling Fireworks & Fountains spectacular. The prominent and renowned display merges glorious luminary skies with stunning fountains. This weekend, Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet  Swan Lake will be the main attraction. Colorful fountains will be choreographed to the amazing work.

17. Top Rank Boxing

Top Rank Boxing

Where: Liacouras Center | 1776 N Broad St
When: Saturday, August 10 | 8 p.m.

Carl “The Jackal” Frampton was forced to drop out of Saturday’s featherweight main event against Emmanuel Dominguez. This unfortunate event has surged Sosa vs. Rhoades into the limelight. Come to the Liacouras Center for a marvelous fight full of skill and brawn.

18. Ashanti with Ja Rule

When: Saturday, August 10 | 7:30 p.m.

The Mann Center will be bursting with vocal talent this Saturday night. R&B singer Ashanti will be performing some of her hits at the popular amphitheater. Special guest and Grammy-winner Mýa will also be serenading the crowd with her signature sound and sultry vocals. Ja Rule will also be performing.

19. Train and the Goo Goo Dolls

Where: BB&T Pavillion | 1 Harbour Blvd | Camden, NJ
When: Saturday, August 10 | 7:30 p.m.

Train, The Goo Goo Dolls, and Allen Stone will be performing at the BB&T Pavillion this Saturday night. The alternative-rock and singer-songwriters will be playing many of the tracks that took them to the top of the charts decades ago. For those looking for great music on the waterfront, head to the NJ this weekend.

20. Chestnut Hill Restaurant Week 

Where: Various locations
When: Sunday, August 11 through Friday, August 16

Chestnut Hill Restaurant Week will kick into gear next week. There will be savory prix-fixe meals for wallet-friendly deals. Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant and several frequented hotspots are all participating. Head to Campbell’s Place to chow down on bites from Chef/Owner Rob Mullen, who has also cooked for celebrity musicians Beyoncé, Jay Z, and U2. Or get intimate and cozy at MICA; don’t forget the wine – it’s BYOB.

21. Jamaica’s 57th Independence Celebration & Bob Marley Tribute

When: Sunday, August 11 | 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This Sunday come out and celebrate the beauty and wonders of island culture. In celebration of Jamaica’s 57th year of independence, this event will have a bun eating contest, a beer-drinking contest, live music, art, dance performances, and more. Miss Universe Jamaica Davina Bennett, “Queen of Reggae” Marcia Griffith, and others will be in attendance.

22. Dynamo vs. Union

Where: Talen Energy Stadium | 1 Stadium Dr, Chester, PA
When: Sunday, August 11 | 6 p.m.

The first place Philadelphia Union will be taking on the Huston Dynamo this Sunday night. Talen Energy Stadium will be rocking with screaming fans at this Eastern vs Western Conference showdown. It will be Military Appreciation Day. The players will be wearing limited-edition military-inspired warm-up jerseys and the West Point Parachute Team will present the game ball. Delicious bonus: Sunday will also Dollar Dog Night at TES.

23. Khalid

When: Sunday, August 11 | 7:30 p.m.

R&B and alternative act Khalid will be performing in front of thousands of fans at the Wells Fargo Center this Sunday. Bring your friends out to see the “Location” singer and five-time Grammy nominee this Friday weekend.
