Colin Kaepernick to the Eagles?

Stick with me on this one. I know people will see the headline and immediately call me insane, stupid, or a combination of those mixed in with some irrational anger. I get it. When I think of it, my mind tells me I’m an idiot for even thinking this could happen. However, let’s walk through it for a couple minutes and see if we can make sense of it all.

Thursday night, the 49ers were overmatched yet again by the Seattle Seahawks. So far this season, the 49ers have looked sad, confused, boring, overmatched [against everyone except the Vikings] and just going nowhere. They lack talent, depth, and seemingly motivation. Not long ago was it that we saw them beating teams up on a regular basis, looking not only electric offensively and defensively, but also having fun on the field. Now, they are in the basement of the NFL and it looks like that won’t be changing any time soon.

Now comes the question: Why am I stupid enough to think the Eagles could get Kap? Well, to start, there were many rumblings this offseason that the 49ers could look to move the 27-year old QB for the right offer. Then after Thursday night’s game, Matt Maiocco said, “Something big might happen to shake things up.”

Maiocco was not sure of specifics, but he does have quality connections within the 49ers organization. He said something about higher-ups being displeased, and it would seem to suggest someone told him changes could be in the immediate future.

So, the next part of this that could make one believe there could be a chance of this happening is the very organization friendly contract the 49er’s gave Kap that basically put him on a year-to-year status. Why would you do that if you had 100% trust and commitment to that player as your guy, especially if you knew Jim Harbaugh wasn’t really your guy on the sidelines, either?

Of the $126 million contract given to Kap, only $61 million is guaranteed. But not all of the $61 million is truly “guaranteed” as the standard definition of the word would suggest. From 2015 to 2020, there is a “de-escalation” clause of $12 million in unlikely bonuses, according to Business Insider. Per the contract, the 49ers are also free to release Kaepernick every offseason, and wouldn’t have to pay him a single penny moving forward.

So, could the Eagles pull off a trade for this organizationally friendly contract? Would the 49ers be willing and ready to move on from Kap? I don’t know, but with how everything has been going out in the Bay area, plus all of these small pieces of info that make it seem like it could possibly happen, it all makes me ready to go out and purchase my midnight green number 7 Kaepernick Jersey. At least we’d finally have a capable arm with mobility in this offense.

But I’m probably an idiot and this will never happen. For now though I’ll dream as though it could. Living in ignorance is bliss!

Dream with me.
