Morning Brew 7-6-15

After a long and hard fought weekend, we provide you with a few stories to get you on your feet today. Obviously we have to kick things off with the ladies! The US  Women’s National Team took care of business last night, by defeating Japan 5-2 in the World Cup championship game. South Jersey native, Carli Lloyd led the way by scoring 3 goals in the first 16 minutes. Lloyd also won the Golden Ball award as the tournaments most outstanding player. Over 21 million people tuned in last night, (Fox Sports) and watched Team USA dominate Japan at every position. Felt good to be on the right side for once. Congratulations Team USA!

4th of July weekend is all about music, food & fireworks! Safe fireworks. Well, that wasn’t the case for NY Giants D-linemen Jason Pierre-Paul. Paul, (not under contract) inured his right hand while lighting off fireworks in South Florida. There are a few reports out but nothing concrete, except for JPP’s head. I’m sure we’ll know the extent of his injuries later today. At least JPP did not attempt lighting the explosives off the top of his head. RIP Dude

Speaking of music. What an amazing weekend it was! First, on the 4th, Philadelphia’s own, DJ Jazzy Jeff released his latest #SummerTime mixtape. Once again teaming up with Brooklyn DJ, Mick Boogie and once again producing magic. Easily, the ultimate summer time soundtrack. Best part, its free!

Later on, during Saturday Night’s Philly 4th of July Jam, the Legendary Roots crew performed on the Ben Franklin Parkway and once again, left people wanting more. First, the Roots opened up by sampling the 6 ABC theme song. Like Questlove said, “it gets no more Philly than that.” Then, after a few songs that warmed up the crowd, a device that I’ll just label as the machine, was played by a gentleman by the name of Jeremy Ellis. And he went in. The kid is talented and the Roots know it. That’s why, over the last few years Quest and Co. have added him on as much as possible. Hopefully that trend will continue. And finally, the best part of the night was easily watching Mayor Nutter perform “Rappers Delight,” and dropping the mic after his routine. Entertaining from start to finish with CeeLo Green. The Roots were made for the 4th of July Event, I just wonder what will happen with the next Mayor?

Sticking with the music theme, Apple debuted its internet based radio station over the weekend, called “Beats 1.” Hopefully some of the weekend broadcasts will be archived for you to go back and listen to because it was amazing to hear Dr. Dre talk about his favorite producer being J Dilla, along with Q Tip hitting us for 2 solid hours with his “Abstract Radio” theme. And then, to close out the weekend, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake and music-head Scott Vener hosted a radio show that just hit home for all new music lovers. Apple Radio is free for 90 days right now, hit the link here for more details. (Apple)

Monday Monday- Foo Fighters are playing in Camden tonight. Frontman Dave Grohl has a broken leg so he’ll be performing from a throne. ROCK-GOD (BBC)

And the 76ers 2015 first round selection, Jahlil Okafor will make his summer league debut on NBA TV at 7PM tonight. (CBSSports)
