The Phillies fired Ruben Amaro, Jr. today. Andy MacPhail and John Middleton held a press conference today to explain where the organization is headed. Some highlights:
- MacPhail sounds like he wants to hire the popular kid in class as opposed to the nerd that always does his homework on time.
- MacPhail said the search for a new general manager will begin immediately, so it looks like Scott Proefrock will not be the long-term solution.
- Pete Mackanin’s future won’t be decided until the new general manager is hired.
- MacPhail isn’t necessarily targeting a young analytics guru, or an “experienced baseball guy” because he thinks that narrows the field. He wants to look at a wide spectrum of candidates.
One thing, it sounds like MacPhail and Middleton both were on the same page as the fan base. So that begs the question – why the hell did they wait this long to make a decision on Amaro’s future?
