Finally, Nationals fans are doing something productive with their time [and money]. Even though some current and former Nationals players agree with how Jonathan Papelbon handled things with Bryce Harper this past weekend, Nationals fans are already over Papelbon and want him gone.
According to the Allentown Morning Call, one Nationals fan tweeted that he would donate $100 to a charity of the team’s choice if they released Jonathan Papelbon. From there, it grew exponentially:
One Washington fan tweeted the Nationals’ Twitter account Monday, telling the team he’ll donate $100 to a charity of the team’s choice if they cut the 34-year-old closer by the end of the day. In less than an hour Monday, tweeting fans had already pledged almost $2,000. A single fan later tweeted he would donate $3,400 himself.
It’s not that simple though.
Papelbon agreed to go to Washington, which was on his no-trade list, partially because it guaranteed him $11 million for the 2016 season. He had a $13 million option on his original contract.
Even though the team didn’t bite on the social media challenge, it’s possible they’ll eventually make the move.
I’m honestly not surprised. Papelbon had an astounding 3.04 ERA after being traded to Washington, which was his highest since 2010. He was a damn fine performer when he was with the Phillies, but it seems like that trade to the Nationals made him lose some of his mojo. And it’s hilarious.
