Ed Rendell: Eagles Fans Shouldn’t Boo Players

Saturday night after the embarrassing Eagles’ loss to the Redskins, I didn’t catch much of Eagles Postgame Live on Comcast SportsNet because there was really no point. Sure, I missed the lights going out on Chip Kelly, which is hilarious, but I also missed this gem of former governor Ed Rendell and Brian Westbrook going at it over… booing.

Yep, this is the same Ed Rendell that penned this book – “A Nation of Wusses: How America’s Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great.” Not playing football in the snow also makes us wusses. [I wonder if Rendell ever realized that whole scenario was to protect the fans’ safety, but I digress.] You know, when you’re an Eagles fan and you’re out there spending your hard-earned cash to watch the football team that you love completely shit the bed, you’re supposed to just sit on your hands, remain silent, and not boo.

That’s coming from the same guy that called us a nation of wusses. Rendell said on Postgame Live on Saturday night that we shouldn’t boo the players on the field when they’re trying hard. Westbrook vehemently disagreed.

I think the fans should be careful not to boo our players when they’re obviously trying hard and doing the best they can,” Rendell said in regards to DeMarco Murray. “Don’t hold the money against him. Again, he didn’t hold us up and say pay him the money.”

“Fans, you don’t do anybody a service by booing our own players.”

Longtime Eagle great Brian Westbrook was asked to chime on the issue and he adamantly disagreed with Rendell’s take.

“I believed that when you played good, people are going to cheer, and when you played bad, you’re going to get booed,” Westbrook said. “That’s just part of being a professional player. I think when your play dictates you should get booed, you should get booed. It’s tough being at home. But that’s just part of the game.”

Gotta agree with Westbrook here. While I understand Rendell’s sentiment that booing DeMarco Murray after one carry was kind of cheap, he didn’t do anything this season to warrant any other reaction from the fans. We don’t think they’re not playing hard. We just think they’re not good enough.

And since when does Rendell feel this way? It’s like he let the losing get to him somehow and has just had enough of just about everything.
