When we delve into the reasons why Chip Kelly was fired, there are actually quite a few. He reportedly didn’t want to give up personnel control. His players basically quit on him. He was really offputting in the NovaCare Complex, gaining a reputation as a weirdo and an asshole. So, when we snuff out the possible reasons Jeffrey Lurie had had enough of Chip “ruining” his team, there wasn’t a price he wouldn’t pay to fire him.
Now, thanks to Business Insider, we have a monetary figure that firing Chip Kelly will cost the Eagles. According to this article, the Eagles owed Chip a little more than $13 million that was left on his five-year contract. The deal he signed in 2013 paid him a total of $32.5 million with an annual salary of $6.5 million. For all of you mathemagicians, those numbers should check out.
So, in theory, Lurie thought that paying Chip $13 million to go away and have his boy, Howie Roseman, help him find a new coach was more beneficial to his team than the option of keeping Chip around for at least one more year.
Business Insider goes on to note that Chip earned roughly $1.25 million per win during his tenure as Eagles head coach.
