Former Seattle Seahawk Walter Thurmond signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in the spring. While the end of the NFL season brings upon talk about the Playoffs and the Super Bowl for many, it’s also the time that players start thinking about next year, especially if their contracts are set to expire at the end of the season – as is the case with Thurmond. The Eagles defense has struggled at time this season, but Thurmond has added some value to the team.
If the Eagles win out, they’ll make the playoffs. They do battle with the Cardinals on Sunday night, but more importantly, they play the Skins and Giants in two huge division matchups to end the season. As improbable as it once seemed, the Eagles have a legit shot to sneak into the playoffs. But what about Thurmond? Does he think he’ll be back next season?
Thurmond recently spoke to NJ Advance Media on Thursday and spoke about whether he’s even started contract negotiations with the Eagles yet.
“Not that I know of. It’s one of those things that I haven’t been worried about. I’m just focused on this season and making a push for the playoffs. A lot of guys like to sign for long-term extensions because of different aspects to their team and stuff like that. It’s just one of those things that when it happens, it happens.”
Thurmond would continue:
“It’s one of those things that if we can work something out, I’d love to be here. But also I understand it’s a business. There are a lot of positions and scenarios that need to be addressed on the team. Maybe I’m not a priority to their situation. I just understand the business. They can go out and draft a free safety. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. Everything will work out but it’s too early to tell. Especially with the draft. Who knows who they’re going to re-sign and let go.”
It’ll be interesting to see what directions the Eagle go after the season. It’s been a very bizarre season for them and their defense has looked really poor at times. Depending on how the Eagles finish this season, you have to figure that some major changes will be coming. Perhaps, with the biggest move maybe involving canning Billy Davis.
