Penguins Announcers Basically Suggested Players Should Dive against the Flyers

There’s one thing that separates Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. You see, we’re normal. We tell it like it is. We tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth when people that live in cities like Pittsburgh think they have some kind of medal owed to them each and every year for being the Most Valuable Yinzer. I swear, they all fight for that medal each year. I’m not even sure any of them deserve it, either.

A couple of guys that fight for that medal belong to the Penguins’ broadcasting booth in Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey. These guys are an earsore, and I would know because I’ve heard their commentary before. But tonight, they gave a whole new meaning to the word homer. They would do anything for the Penguins to just get one damn win against the Flyers because it had been just over two years since their last one. Yup, the Penguins haven’t beaten the Flyers since 2013. They wanted that win so bad, that they suggested the players should dive whenever they feel a stick on them towards the end of the first period. The NHL: The best hockey in the world, ladies and gentlemen.

If you get a stick on you, one of the Pittsburgh Penguins, go down. Go down a little bit easy. Penguins are looking for a power play.”

Stupid announcers. Get a hobby. Though, they’re not wrong. They know that’s what the team they cover does, so they were probably surprised there were no diving attempts at that point of the game coming down to the end of the first period.

Lucky for them, the Flyers let them win the game, 4-3.

Bob Errey won 3 Stanley Cups on two different teams. He was a captain on another. He was being honest. If you don’t think anyone else in the league buys a penalty, I suggest you watch more games.

Every team buys a penalty. But when your hometown announcers are blatantly saying their own players SHOULD dive ON AIR, it’s ridiculous and stupid. I don’t care how many Stanley Cups anyone has, that has nothing to do with his dumb comment.

By the way, he’s not calling for a ‘dive’ he’s asking for an embellishment if anything. You cover hockey and don’t know the difference? A dive is when there is no opposing foul but a player acts as if there was. An embellishment is when a player enhances an actual foul by acting is if it was more than it was. Errey is clearly asking for an embellishment when he says “if you feel a stick…” Yes, they are illegal as well, but you really should know the difference.

“Claudia embellished the hooking call by falling as soon as he felt the stick.”

Name calling now? Haha thanks for reinforcing the Philly stereotype. It will never go away as long as there are media hack wannabes out there, particularly those whose first sport isn’t even hockey. Such a shame, I know so many decent Philly fans, but their media instigates dumb stuff like this-The National Enquirer element of the game. Always worried about stuff that doesn’t make one bit of difference. Congratulations on your winning streak. I was around for the other one too. The FLyers always have our number, this was a very special game for us and we may have turned a corner…but we want to cover what a color announcer said based on his experience as a player.
