Word came out the other day that the Eagles are interested in Sean Payton as their next head coach. Needless to say, most of Eagles Nation love the idea of Payton in Philly. Well, could Lurie be in the process of assuring this happens?
Word came out today courtesy of Bleacher Report that the Eagles are interested in trading for Sean Payton.
The Saints have set a low price for HC Sean Payton in terms of their asking price in a potential trade.
According to Cole, the reason for the low price is that GM Mickey Loomis is looking to create a large trade market for Payton. Cole mentions that there’s a “strong possibility” that a bidding war could break out for Payton’s services.
As of now, Cole reports that there are four teams with interest in Payton right now including the Giants, Dolphins, Eagles, and 49ers.
In the end, Cole expects that the amount of control a team is willing to give to Payton will ultimately be the biggest issue for him if he ends up deciding to leave the Saints. Cole adds that if a team is willing to give him at least some control of their personnel, he would strongly consider leaving.
Over the weekend, Jay Glazer mentioned that Payton could possibly be had for a second-round pick.
On Monday, Payton and met Loomis for a good portion of the day, and the belief is that the length of the meeting was related to a discussion regarding compensation, according Ian Rapoport.
Payton is under contract through the 2017 season, and makes $8 million per year with this agreement. However, reports have said that Payton’s contract will not deter teams from approaching the Saints about a potential deal.
Payton, 51, has lead the Saints to a record of 84-53 (61.3 percent) including their only Super Bowl title over the course of eight-plus seasons in New Orleans.
We’ll have more regarding Payton’s future with either the Saints or other NFL teams as the news is available.
