Paul Domowitch reported last night that Sean Payton and John Harbaugh were on the top of the Eagles’ wish list as head coaching candidates to replace Chip Kelly. We mentioned Domo’s report on Payton, because he tweeted out a little tease before the article was published. As I began reading it, I was surprised to find buried in that article was this nugget about Jeffrey Lurie’s desire to bring back John Harbaugh.
Lurie would seem to have almost no shot at getting Harbaugh, who spent 10 years as an assistant with the Eagles before getting hired by Baltimore in 2008. Under Harbaugh, the Ravens have the third most wins of any team in the league in the last eight years and won a Super Bowl in 2012.
The Ravens lost to the Bengals Sunday, 24-16, to finish 5-11. But there’s been no indication that his job is in jeopardy or that he is unhappy in Baltimore.
What’s more, general manager Ozzie Newsome doesn’t seem to have any interest in letting him out of the final two years of his contract, even if the Eagles were willing to offer a compensation package and Harbaugh was willing to go.
All very good points by Domo, and we told you a few days ago what Harbaugh said when he was asked about it last week. He said there wasn’t any way there’s even a discussion about that.
Can you blame him? His team was picked to be a Super Bowl contender this season and has just run into rotten luck. I can’t fathom in any way, shape or form that the Ravens let Harbaugh walk, even with a big compensation package that Payton’s likely going to require.
It’s become the cool thing to do nowadays to not believe any reports or anything anybody says because things change in an instant. So, could Harbaugh eventually come back to Philly as the head coach? Maybe. But it doesn’t sound like it’s happening any time soon.
Would the Philly fab base love John back here. Of course they would. Is it going to happen? The odds of that happening are the same odds Bryce Harper coming to the phillies. Wistful thinking.
