This Guy Could Make the Eagles’ Defense Nasty, if Hired as Head Coach

Lost in all the craziness surrounding the talk of the Eagles bringing in Tom Coughlin for an interview, is the fact that there aren’t many “sexy” candidates to choose from for next head coach of the Eagles. The one guy that was getting the most love from around the league was Adam Gase, who is now the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles have asked to talk with Bengal defensive coordinator Paul Guenther about their coaching vacancy. While you may not know too much about Guenther, he certainly knows a lot about making defenses strong.

Phil Sheridan, writer for ESPN broke down what Guenther could bring to the table, if he were to become the head coach of the Eagles.

“Guenther, a native of Richboro, Bucks County, is expected to interview for the Philadelphia Eagles’ head-coaching job within the next week. Having grown up in the area, Guenther would fulfill owner Jeff Lurie’s requirement that his next head coach has a feel for the history and passion of Philadelphia football. But there’s more. When Zimmer and Guenther were putting together their defense back in 2007, they said they were influenced by the defense Jim Johnson was running in Philadelphia. Johnson’s fire-zone scheme was aggressive and designed to confuse and pressure opposing quarterbacks as much as possible. That’s a brand of defense that Eagles fans cherish, and Guenther has kept it going in Cincinnati. With Zimmer gone, Guenther’s defense ranked second in the NFL in points allowed. The Bengals allowed 17.4 points a game, just behind Seattle at 17.3 points per game.”

I don’t know about you guys, but I yearn for the days of past where the Eagles’ defense was a mean unit. Here’s what I want.

Give me that defense and give me those uniforms and I’ll be a happy man. An interview with Guenther could come within the next week.

    We have many problems.
    Need a real QB
O line breaks down with overall protection, inconsistent as a group overall.
The entire defensive unit does not attack opposin offenses and QBs anymore.
I would be very pleased with Guenther and a new aggressive direction for the future.
Jeffrey needs to hire a good coach. We will be in development for 2-3 years but in order to turn things around…we must have a talented head coach
