When the Eagles announced they were hiring a head of player personnel, most people assumed it would be Howie Roseman. Hell, I thought it would be Howie Roseman. But that’s not exactly what has been reported over the last several weeks, and the Eagles are still searching for someone to head their player personnel department to work collaboratively with Jeffrey Lurie and Roseman.
The fact that it’s February 2nd and the Eagles have been unable to hire a new head of player personnel is very troubling. It seems like Lurie and Roseman also find that troubling.
Today, Geoff Mosher of Eagle Scouting Nest, and former CSN Philly-er, reported that the Eagles have halted their search at this point and won’t hire a head of player personnel until after the NFL draft.
The Eagles have tabled their search for a personnel chief and aren’t expected to hire until after the NFL draft, according to several league sources familiar with the situation.
The Eagles, who have no scouting chief after firing coach Chip Kelly and top personnel executive Ed Marynowitz, are looking for a high-ranking senior executive to lead the scouting department and determine the fate of current scouts, per sources, but they opened their search at a time when NFL teams are knee deep in the pre-draft process and would be reluctant to allow a top personnel executive to leave.
Teams don’t normally allow an experienced, senior executive to walk out their doors about one month from free agency and less than three months from the draft.
What this basically means is Roseman is in charge of the upcoming draft and free agency. While many are quick to point out this looks damning in regards to Roseman “keeping people away,” Mosher notes that at this point, teams would be silly to let high-ranking executives of their own leave to join another team, especially during the pre-draft process.
In fact, we listed some possible targets the Eagles could be high on in heading their player personnel department. Possible names include: Seattle’s Trent Kirchner, Kansas City’s Chris Ballard, Baltimore’s Eric DeCosta, Pittsburgh’s Omar Khan or Arizona’s Terry McDonough.
They’re all from pretty successful teams, so it’s no wonder those teams wouldn’t want them to leave at this point. But, would they be better suited to wait until after the draft process to let them go? I’m not so sure. What good could they bring at that point? Essentially very little until next year’s offseason. And that also goes along with the Eagles heading into the draft with an incomplete scouting department, and without a college scouting director. That doesn’t sound good.
The de facto general manager has re-signed some top names so far, and with Fletcher Cox reportedly talking with the team about an extension, Roseman’s definitely been a busy guy the last few weeks. It probably would have made his life a lot easier if they had a new head of player personnel hired and ready to help him.
Kyle over at CB hates us. I tried to help him, but he filters my comments, so Ill leave it here to show how childish and immature their site got with the comment monitoring:
Hey Kyle,
Was sent over by Brace. We got a service over there called Gotta Guy. We all have different specialties we refer each other for. Well I do IT and he sent me over here with a 15 percent discount offer for you, to let you know, that I can easily do a quick (faster then it takes Jim to actually proof read his articles) redirect of crossingbroad.com, to direct straight to phillyinfluencer.com, that way the readers can get their philly sports news faster, without ads, and less of a hassle, faster. Im sure they would like that, I mean you still get credit for the site hits, though. Let me know, and hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks,
gotta guy..
