Much has been made the last 24 hours of Howie Roseman’s “purge” of Chip Kelly’s key acquisitions last offseason. Sure, Roseman got rid of some cumbersome [love that word now] contracts that helped the team gain more cap relief to where they could likely sign Fletcher Cox without a financial problem, but there’s also the fact that Roseman traded away Kiko Alonso – a guy that wasn’t even making $1 million next season and had tremendous upside coming off a bad season that certainly can be attributed to his knee injury.
I don’t mind Alonso being traded like some others – they have a good group of linebackers and I don’t think he’ll exactly be missed. They’ll replace him and nobody will probably remember Kiko in October.
The Eagles, for all intents and purposes, aren’t done making moves. They have to obviously replace the guys they traded away yesterday, whether it be in free agency or the draft. And some people might consider old faces coming back to the nest now that Chip Kelly is gone. One of those names that popped up was Brandon Boykin, who was traded to the Steelers by Chip last year. Another name: Sean Smith, who’s very familiar with Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. Here’s what Phil Sheridan says, via ESPN:
Brandon Boykin. As long as the Eagles are shipping out Chip Kelly’s 2015 acquisitions, they might as well try to recover some of the players Kelly got rid of. Boykin was traded to Pittsburgh, where he didn’t really fit in. A solid slot corner, Boykin is also headed to free agency.
…
Sean Smith. Doug Pederson watched his offense go against Smith every day in practice. And it would be richly ironic if the post-Kelly Eagles were to sign a 6-foot-4 cornerback. Big people can cover little people, too.

Also in the mix: Leon Hall, Cincinnati; Casey Hayward, Green Bay, Patrick Robinson, San Diego.
ESPN’s Josina Anderson named the Eagles as one team that is interested in Robinson. Like Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, he came into the NFL as a first-round pick by the New Orleans Saints. He would fit the profile of a second-tier free agent with the potential to be a solid starter.
If Boykin returns to the Eagles, more pressure might be put on him to perform the way he did under Chip Kelly before he was traded and barely made the Steelers’ roster. Would you want Boykin back to replace the vacancy left by Maxwell? Would you consider his struggles in Pittsburgh as an anomaly? I’m still on the fence.
