Audio: Howie Roseman Opens up about Pretty Much His Entire Career

FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager has a podcast titled, conveniently, The Peter Schrager Podcast. His latest episode, which dropped yesterday, featured Eagles’ general manager Howie Roseman. Here’s the synopsis listed for the show:

How John Elway’s father shaped a young boy’s dream of becoming an NFL GM, Howie Roseman joins Peter Schrager for a relaxed one-on-one interview. Roseman shares stories about how he went from a kid who never played football past high school to the NFL’s youngest GM. Plus, he weighed in on the early 2000’s Eagles and what happened with TO, the thought process behind the “Dream Team” Eagles and how the lockout played a role, the hiring of Chip Kelly and how taking a year off from player personnel duties allowed him to visit with executives from the NBA to the EPL and changed his way of thinking, the evaluation of Carson Wentz and their decision to move up in the draft to get him, and much more!

Sounds pretty interesting. I listened to the interview and grabbed some highlights:

  • Humbled by last year’s experience being demoted because of Chip Kelly.
  • The Terrell Owens saga provided him the tools necessary to deal with future incidents. You know, like the whole Chip Kelly thing.
  • Michael Vick’s signing was more Andy Reid’s idea than anyone.
  • He loves him some Andy Reid because he was the best protector ever.
  • Advice to young general managers today: preparation means nothing until you’re in the seat. Utilize everyone at your disposal. Unless they’re Chip Kelly. [I added this]
  • Nnamdi Asomugha signing was indicative of the Eagles thinking they were really close to a Super Bowl championship.
  • He also loves him some Donovan McNabb.
  • Ryan Grigson – great evaluator, great person, great friend.
  • Jon Runyan – tough.

There was more interesting stuff, including more talk about Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz, so you can listen to the entire 46-minute interview below, beginning around the 7-minute mark.
