Despite the acquisition of Stefen Wisniewski in the offseason and Isaac Seumalo in the third round of the NFL Draft, the incumbent Allen Barbre is still the starter at left guard.
“Right now, it is Allen Barbre’s job,” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said. “I think again, that’s something we did through the draft and free agency to shore up that spot. I really like where we’re at. I like the depth at that position now.”
Right now is right now, but what about training camp and preseason? Are Wisniewski and Seumalo going to be competing with Barbre for the starting gig? Seumalo is losing valuable practice time. He’s still at Oregon State because the institution runs on a quarters system.
In other news, rookie fifth-round running back Wendell Smallwood impressed on Day 1 of the OTAs and Pederson had some kind words for the West Virginia product.
“He’s a guy that I think can be explosive,” Pederson said. “I really like how well he catches the football out of the backfield. I think that’s something that’s just a gift that he has. He’s a natural pass-catcher. I like that part of him. I like his vision.”
