Howie Roseman appears to have won back many Philadelphians — at least temporarily. It’s amazing what one whirlwind of an offseason can do.
Roseman appeared on WIP’s Morning Show morning to discuss his busy offseason, focusing primarily on the quarterback position.
The Eagles have a whopping $82 million tied up at quarterback between Sam Bradford, Carson Wentz and Chase Daniel. It’s the most important position in sports and Roseman defended his plan.
“I think the plan is really good. I also felt like Sam had a tremendous minicamp, he had a really good offseason,” he said. “And Chase looks really good. He’s got such good knowledge of this offense. So, obviously we’re sitting here in June, but when you look at that position right now and kind of circle back to where we were in January, it’s exciting just to think about where we could be at the most important position maybe in sports.”
And Wentz?
“Every day he makes a play that makes you go wow,” Roseman said. “He’s got that set of physical tools. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s athletic.”
Roseman also explained the importance of building around the quarterback.
“I think that’s why that we put so many resources into that position because when we look at successful football teams over a period of time, no one is going anywhere without high level play from the quarterback position. So, I think that’s fair when you look at that to evaluate that quarterback position and then look at the whole team. But the flip side of that is that, if you have a really good quarterback and he’s playing at a high level and you’re not able to surround him with pieces on both sides of the ball you have no chance anyway,” he said.
That’s also something Roseman has done this offseason, making sure the Eagles have a nucleus of years to come by locking up his core in Fletcher Cox, Malcolm Jenkins, Zach Ertz, Lane Johnson and Vinny Curry. He also dished out money to younger free agents such as Rodney McLeod and Brandon Brooks. Good thing the Eagles have an owner that isn’t afraid to spend. Philadelphia’s handed out $280 million in guaranteed money since January 1st, by far the most in the NFL and doubling the New York Giants, who are in second.
“He’s always said yes to things no matter who was running things,” Roseman said of Jeffrey Lurie. “That doesn’t happen everywhere in the National Football League.”
So the Eagles have won another offseason, now let’s see if it’ll finally translate onto the field the next couple of years. Listen to the interview below.
