The MLB Draft commenced today and the Phillies held the first overall pick due to their fantastic 63-99 record last season. So, with the first overall pick, many wondered if the Phillies would target another top arm or a much-needed bat.
Unfortunately in this year’s draft, there wasn’t a clear-cut frontrunner. So, the Phillies decided to head to the outfield and draft Mickey Moniak out of La Costa Canyon High School.
Get acquainted with Mickey:
Moniak has already committed to UCLA, so it’ll be interesting to see if he decides to go to college or start right away with the Phillies organization.
UPDATE: With their second pick in the draft, and 42nd overall, the Phillies rook right-handed pitcher Kevin Gowdy out of Santa Barbara High School in California. Both he and Moniak were set to attend UCLA in the fall.
