At least he got it out of the way before the season starts.
The Philadelphia Eagles placed injury-prone Ryan Mathews on the active/non-active football injury list on Wednesday. He suffered an ankle injury while working out on his own last week.

Mathews was second among running backs in average per carry (5.1) last year, totaling 539 yards and six touchdowns. He’s played all 16 games in a season just once so far in his six-year career. The Eagles running backs are thin behind Mathews. Darren Sproles is an electric play-maker, but he’s not going to get more than 10 carries in a game. Kenjon Barner, meanwhile, has 18 career carries, while Wendell Smallwood is a fifth-round rookie, although he showed some promise during the spring. Byron Marshall and Cedric O’Neal are undrafted rookies.
