Andy Reid Explains How He Would Handle the Carson Wentz Situation

It looks like Andy Reid agrees with his pupil.

Reid made an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s radio show The Herd and gave his thoughts on when he’d start a rookie quarterback.

“Well, I would give him a year,” Reid said via NJ.com “I did that with Donovan (McNabb). I kind of brought him along through the first year and the last couple games — we weren’t very good. We won five games our first year. So those last couple games I gave him an opportunity to get in there and start. And I was lucky enough to bring Doug Pederson with me as a quarterback at that time and it was good to have him take all the blows in Philadelphia for Donovan. And then, also help Donovan, teach him. It’s the blitz game that those kids need to work on.”

If Sam Bradford goes down at any point during the year and the Eagles are in contention, Chase Daniel will most likely get the next crack to start and not Wentz. Daniel has the experience and knows the playbook because he played for Pederson while he was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

How many games Wentz starts is all obviously going to be contingent on how the Eagles fare. If they’re in playoff contention all year long, Wentz won’t see a snap, but once they’re out of the picture, Wentz should get some playing time.

Wentz is currently missing meaningful practice and preseason reps due to the hairline fracture he suffered during the Eagles’ first exhibition contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

McNabb made his first career start in the Eagles’ 10th game of the season during the 1999 campaign where they began 2-7. D-Mac wound up starting five more contests after that.
