Shots fired!
Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce was a guest on 94.1 WIP Monday afternoon and discussed why the running game declined last season among other topics, placing fault on himself, the scheme, offensive line and DeMarco Murray.
“I don’t think necessarily we had the best back that we had a few years ago either,” the outspoken Kelce said. “There’s a lot of things that played into that.”
If you read between the lines, Kelce is obviously referencing that LeSean McCoy was a better running back for Chip Kelly’s offensive system than Murray.
“I’m going to chastise one person over the other,” he said, but also admitted that “it’s more than one person.”
When discussing Kelly’s predictability on offense, Kelce talked about how McCoy was still able to pick up yards in 2013, when he posted 1,607 yards on the ground. The offensive line was also at full strength, with all five starters playing all 16 regular-season games.
“The running back was in shotgun and the defense knew where it was going and we still put up yards,” he said.
Since Kelce put blame on himself for last season’s debacle, what did he do during the offseason to help himself avoid another disappointing year?
“We’ve studied the film a lot,” he said. “We’re going to try and make sure that I’m putting myself in a better situation from a technique standpoint. I’ve also added about 10 pounds right now, hopefully 15 when the season starts.”
